Tass, the official soviet press agency, says the Manila statement of the seven-nation talks on Viet Nam shows that the allied positions “in essence remain the same.” Tass says, “The communique proclaimed the readiness for the withdrawal of foreign troops from South Viet Nam, but this statement is surrounded with all sorts of conditions.”
Indonesia's ex-Foreign Minister Subandrio is sentenced to death after being found guilty of treason by military tribunal. It appears unlikely that Subandrio's former boss, President Sukarno, will invoke a 30-day grace period and grant him clemency. Subandrio was charged with failing to tell Sukarno of an imminent communist coup attempt on October 1965, and misuse of government funds.
A federal tax increase “will trigger a recession that will wipe out all the economic gains of the last 10 years" former Vice President Nixon asserts. He says the Johnson administration has “condemned itself and the nation to a tax increase in 1967" instead of taking such action last April or May when it could have been done “without danger of a recession."
