SUBLIME CINEMA #708 - THE STRANGE COLOUR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS

Cattet and Forzani just released Reflection in a Dead Diamond, and it looks nuts. The Belgium-based husband and wife filmmaking team have put together a few visually arresting films over the years, notably Amer and this Polanski-like 'thriller'; its more labyrinthine and smarter than it lets on, and it aims to rise above an Argento-like, stylized pastiche.

SUBLIME CINEMA #689 - AFTERSUN

One of the best of the last few years, and a movie that has played a big part of Paul Mescal's rise. He's soon to be seen leading Ridley Scott's sequel to Gladiator.

Charlotte Wells made a film of purpose and quiet power, using few resources and two great actors, Mescal and Frankie Corio, who are two of the most engaging young presences I've seen on the screen since Babyteeth.

SUBLIME CINEMA #692 - THE BRUTALIST

I wasn't as gaga over this movie as many were, I found it overly long, under-edited, and Laszlo (Adrien Brody's) character unlikeable. However - the images were breathtaking, and many sequences were deeply moving and left me hypnotized well after they passed by.

It was absolutely worth seeing in IMAX, and Vista Vision is a rare treat in 2025. Every penny of it is seen up close in a texture that is all too lacking in the cinema these days.

Brady Corbet delivered something that cannot be confused for what passes for a film these days on most streaming services. This is a film - told in grand, operatic images and steeped in a deep nostalgia for world that might never have existed.

SUBLIME CINEMA #701 - SINNERS

I found this movie pretty damn fun, original, and awesome in scope. I wouldn't even know how to describe it - since it's billed as a horror film, which it is, almost classically - but there's so much more going on here. It's a musical, and a comedy, and a rich period drama, and an elegy on race and violence. Oh, and filmed in 65mm IMAX and looks very swell indeed.

The musical sequences - it's brimming with incredible music - really brought it to another level, and the combo was so jarring that I left the theater realizing I'd never really seen anything like it.

I really was not a fan of the Black Panther flicks so this movie finally made me appreciate Ryan Coogler and gave me an idea of what he's capable of post-Wakanda.
