What follows is my response to a letter I received on September 1, 2017.  The original letter can be found here.  The subject matter pertains to a Reformation history class being offered this fall by Mr. Saxton.  My response is going out in the mail today.  I present it here for your consideration.

The Bible says that God has delegated offices of leadership.. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (‭‭Romans‬ ‭13:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬) “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” (Hebrews‬ ‭13:17‬ ‭ESV‬‬) We are to see authority as a positional, not a personal, issue. God has delegated people over us for His own reasons. We do not pick which supervisor is over us at work. But that supervisor’s authority does not rest in his fairness, or whether or not we respect him. It rests in the authority of the corporation. And the authority of the corporation rests in God. We are to respect the position that some people have over us, as well as the fact that God has chosen them to be in our lives at that point in time, even if there is nothing to respect in the character of the person. 🙌🏻

1 Peter 5:5-7

5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud     but shows favor to the humble.”

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Most of the time I feel like older people/elders are using their authority to get what they want, even though sometimes they have unreasonable demands. But God says in the Bible that we should submit to our elders(well I think as long as their demands don't contradict God's commands.) The Bible also tells us that it pays to be humble, because in due time God will lift you up. We may get annoyed by our parents/elders but as long as their demands aren't contradicting God then we should submit to their authority for one of God's commandments is to respect and honor our parents. That's just God's way of exercising your patience and endurance. If you're having a hard time obeying your elders then ask God for grace and mercy so that you would be able to do so. For all our qualities comes from God not by our own efforts. All the endurance, self-control etc. are qualities that God chose to give us. Actually we don't have ANYTHING now that WE DID NOT receive from God. So if you lack anything, ask God for it and He will give it to you.
