SubSpace
1997
This is an early physical copy, when it was for sale. It would later be known as Continuum. You can still download and play this game for free on Steam.
Installing Windows 95 RTM onto my Libretto 70CT, on a hard drive that will be moved to my red Satellite T1910CS, due to its lack of functional floppy drive. This is the original version of 95, served up on 13 floppy disks formatted in Microsoft’s proprietary Distribution Media Format. DMF allows you to cram 1.7MB worth of data onto 3½” floppies, instead of the more typical 1.44MB.
Oh, and this is all the while Vega helps supplement my corrupted disks (because I know I have a few that haven’t survived the last 22 years intact).
And my Satellite P25 is playing Subspace Continuum on T3 The Gauntlet! waiting for someone to come along and play... but more on that later.
All while I eat a vegi-dog with banana ketchup.
SubSpace also known as Continuum turns 20 this year.
It’s basically the classic game of Spacewar! taken to the extremes of what a multiplayer zero-g newtonian space fighter game in 2D could possibly contain. It was one of the first games you played with people over the internet -- some consider it to be the very first MMO. It used to have a massive player base, but as time has gone on, many servers have slowly gone quiet. There are still a handful of dedicated fans who play the game, and make new servers. Hell, it even became available on Steam in 2015. Did I mention that it has been and still is free to play?
“T3 The Gauntlet!” the server I spent my teenage years playing on is empty. However, I would like to change that, if only for a brief experiment. I want people to experience this 20 year old gem that is very near and dear to me as it was. A massive chaotic frenzy of spaceships shooting at each other in the blackness of space. If you’re interested, download the game and give it a try and look for me under the handle of C64Kid. All are welcome to join me!
Friday, February 3rd starting at 9PM EST in T3 The Gauntlet!
