Kids going weeks without a teacher
I am crushed by what is going on at my school.
The remedial math class has no teacher. Their "real" teacher is in "teacher detention" at the district, which is supposed to be a disciplinary action of professional development, but is actually a joke. So, the teacher they HAD was bad enough to be removed. So, he was BAD. They then had a sub, who for some reason, shared my room during planning period. This meant that is she got in there before me, she was on my computer. And also that my planning period was louder than my own classes because she exercised no attempt to control the class at all.
One day, and one day only, she was at my desk on my computer BOOKING A DISNEY VACATION. Yes, and the hotel too. How do I know? I was standing behind her looking at the screen that she made NO attempt to hide. Also, she was on the SCHOOL phone with hotels. She did not make contact with the students once. For an hour.
The next day she made them do a coloring activity. For math, you know. This time she was in a small, computerless desk, and silently unhappy. This day, she spoke to the students. Spoke is a nice word- she berated and belittled them. The students are 90% hispanic, and from many different countries. When the students were making noise, which didn't bother her the day before when she was booking a hotel, she stood and screamed at them. She said, "I'm gonna call your momma. And I know how MEXICAN mommas hate it when I call home".
I freeze. Holy schnikey did she just call someone Mexican????? Yes.
She did not come the next day. She was in the teacher's lounge on the phone when they found her. At that point the children had already been sent to the gym for the remainder of class.
This week, and for the last 6 days they have not even had a sub, or as I like to say, a pulse and a mouth.
One of the children with special needs asked me, "why don't we have a teacher". I straight up told him, "because the district is not providing for your education and I wish I was even allowed to take over for your class, but I'm not". He was literally sad to miss math, y'all. MATH.
