"Rule Number One: Emotion is inefficient.
Rule Number Two: Every moment must be efficient.
Rule Number Three: Evaluate and anticipate the enemy before you act."
These words that Bennie had written in a blind scrawl just two days before sat in the back of her mind constantly. It seemed to her that they were etched into her brain just the same as the small scar on her right ankle. Not so obvious, but always there and always lingering. As hard as she tried she couldn't manage to find a way to shake them from her thoughts. "God damn it, Chase," she cursed him in her thoughts, half wishing that he'd never brought up these rules he followed to her. When Siri's robotic voice transcribed this message from her phone into sound for an at the time blind Bennie they struck her in a way that had bewildered her. These rules had her second guessing every life choice she'd made up until that point.
Bennie wouldn't admit it to anyone, let alone herself, but in the time that she'd actually decided to give Chase the time of day he'd taught her more lessons than she could count on both of her hands. Each one of them was etched in her memory, except unlike an Etch-a-Sketch she couldn't just shake her head and forget about them. They lingered with her, taunting her at the end of each day. She knew that it would be more than beneficial to her. It would more than likely even give her the upper hand when it came to fighting for the Elder spot with Corry. The fact that he'd taught her so much in such a little time had her head reeling. She didn't know how he did it but he'd wormed himself into the deepest parts of her mind, tormenting her day and night, a relentless reminder of the things she needed to improve on. Not only that but also a reminder of the fact that she wasn't as numb as she previously thought she was, he'd proved that to her in their first encounter and that was more than she could say for him.
The nagging fact that Bennie had yet to leave an impression on the Russian boy she'd accustomed herself with irked her more than she thought it would. He was just so cold and guarded, she wanted to see what was beneath that, to get a reaction out of him. She wanted to make him mad, she wanted to make him happy and sometimes she wanted to strangle him. The only thing stopping her from the latter was the fear she had for her life on occasion when she was around him. A sudden idea smacked her hard enough to give her a mental whiplash. She'd ask Chase to train, and they would, it just wouldn't be training her. Smiling to herself she darted over to her nightstand and grabbing her phone. After unlocking it she clicked his contact and shot him a text saying "will you come over? i want help training. actual training." and tossing her phone back on the bed without waiting to see his response. She knew he'd show up. With that in mind she ran into her kitchen, searching for snacks and waiting for his arrival.
