I´ve got a few request to paint more Tolkien related artworks- especially from the FirstAge- so I decided to paint the scene of the Dagor Bragollach where Glaurung had it´s first appearance. The Dagor Bragollach ("Battle of Sudden Flame") was a devastating assault launched by Morgoth in FA 455, ending the 400-year Siege of Angband. In winter, rivers of flame erupted from Thangorodrim, scorching Ard-galen into a wasteland, while Glaurung the dragon, Balrogs, and Orc armies overran northern Beleriand. The Elves and Men suffered heavy losses: Dorthonion fell, Angrod and Aegnor were slain, and the Sons of Fëanor were driven back. Dwarves of Belegost briefly repelled Glaurung, but Morgoth's victory shattered the northern defenses. In despair, High King Fingolfin rode to Angband and challenged Morgoth to single combat, wounding him multiple times before falling. That´s why I put him into the front rock in the scene here.
Painted in Photoshop.
