Some of the Best of People

Abū Kurayb reported to us: I heard ‘Abd Allah b. al-Mubārak said: I saw the most pious of people, the most scrupulous of people, the most learned of people, and the best faqih of people. أَخْبَرَنَا الخلال، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا الحريري أن النخعي، حدثهم قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّد بن علي بن عفان، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كريب، قال: سمعت عبد الله بن المبارك، يقول. وَأَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّد بن أَحْمَد بن يَعْقُوب، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّد بن نعيم الضبي، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سعيد مُحَمَّد بن الفضل المذكر، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عبد الله مُحَمَّد بن سعيد المروزي، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حمزة يَعْلَى بن حمزة، قال: سمعت أبا وهب مُحَمَّد بن مزاحم، يقول: سمعت عبد الله بن المبارك، يقول: رأيت أعبد الناس، ورأيت أورع الناس، ورأيت أعلم الناس، ورأيت أفقه الناس، As for the most pious of people, (it is) ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. The People of Paradise

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah said: “Whoever the ummah agrees to as being praiseworthy, then we bear witness they are from the people of Jannah.” قال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية وكذلك من أجمعت الأمة على الثناء عليه فإننا نشهد له بالجنة So for example Imām Aḥmad (may Allāh have mercy on him), al-Shāfiʿī, Abū Ḥanīfa, Mālik, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and other Imāms whom the ummah has agreed upon them being praiseworthy, we bear witness that they are from the people of Jannah. فمثلا الإمام أحمد رحمه الله الشافعي أبو حنيفة مالك سفيان الثوري سفيان بن عيينة وغيرهم من الأئمة أجمعت الأمة على الثناء عليهم فنشهد لهم بأنهم من أهل الجنة Shaykh Muḥammad b. Približi nama nas same, reče nam i oporuku nam snažnu tu posla, da drugome ne nametnemo ono što nama nametnuto ne želimo vidjet, da od nas ne osjeti neko ono što ne želimo mi osjetiti od nekog, da nas ne otrgne trenutno od vječnog... I prije nego li se kud koji uputimo, moramo krenut k sebi, jer uputa najviše leži u nama samima... Puteva ima mnogo, a svaki vodi Iskonu, jer od Njega potekosmo i Njemu moramo da priteknemo... A najbolji su oni, koji se pročišćeni vrate Iskonu...

How Do You Want To Die?

Farqad al-Subkhī (the Imām of the masjid in al-Baṣrah) said, حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي يَحْيَى، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْحَنَّاطُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ فَرْقَدًا، إِمَامَ مَسْجِدِ الْبَصْرَةِ يَقُولُ:

“I entered upon Sufyān al-Thawrī when he was in the state of illness that caused his death. دَخَلُوا عَلَى سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ ,

So a man narrated a ḥadīth to him that surprised him. فَحَدَّثَهُ رَجُلٌ بِحَدِيثٍ , فَأَعْجَبَهُ

So he thrust his hand beneath his bed and withdrew some [writing] tablets of his and he wrote that ḥadīth. وَضَرَبَ يَدَهُ إِلَى تَحْتِ فِرَاشِهِ , فَأَخْرَجَ أَلْوَاحًا لَهُ فَكَتَبَ ذَلِكَ الْحَدِيثَ ,

It was asked of him, ‘[Do you do such a thing] in the state you are in?’ فَقَالُوا لَهُ: عَلَى هَذِهِ الْحَالِ مِنْكَ؟

To which he replied, ‘Indeed it is good and I have heard [something] good, and if I die, then indeed I have written goodness.” فَقَالَ: «إِنَّهُ حَسَنٌ , إِنْ بَقِيتُ فَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ حَسَنًا , وَإِنْ مُتُّ فَقَدْ كَتَبْتُ حَسَنًا»
