sugarcedes x donna summer
okay but a sugarcedes friendship would definitely form before other ppl join the troubletones
- this is basically sugars first *real* friendship at mckinley.
- their friendship starts by mercedes calling up sugar to talk about what songs they should sing for the troubletones.
- mercedes would try to give sugar pointers on her singing, which doesn’t help sugars singing abilities at all.
- sugar takes mercedes shopping at the mall after school and offers to buy her a bunch of stuff, that’s the only way she was able to make friends before. mercedes politely declines and decides to show her what being friends with someone is really like 🥺
- once mercedes gets past sugars... annoying... exterior, she finds a really sweet girl that just wants someone to call a best friend.
- mercedes and sugar have hella sleepovers where they brainstorm what they want the troubletones to be, like it’s essence. they create a little collage of the aesthetic and vibes they want for the group. that’s how they come up with the costumes for ‘candyman’!
- they start eating lunch together everyday, since mercedes doesn’t feel comfortable hanging out with the new directions after they didn’t stick up for her.
- sugar’s family loves mercedes (but i mean, who doesn’t). they even invite mercedes to their expensive trips/holiday vacations.
- mercedes cries on sugars shoulder about how she feels like kurt is leaving her behind in favor of rachel.
- whenever sugar and mercedes try studying together, they always end up on the topic of boys. sugar gushes about what it’s like to have both rory and artie fighting over her & mercedes confides in sugar about the sam and shane situation.
- they celebrate galentines day together !!!
- when mercedes releases her first album, sugar buys approximately 400 physical copies to boost up the sales 💆♀️
sugarcedes one-shot inspired by the tell-tale heart 🫀🩸👁️ (warning for blood and gore, but it’s inspired by the tth, so like…)
The chill summer breeze from the nighttime air ruffled the long tulle of the white veil perched on Mercedes’s head. It was a lovely veil that Mercedes picked out: laced and elbow-length. It was, of course, for her wedding day to be wed to the woman sitting right next to her, Sugar.
Sugar still had her veil on, too. It was just as gorgeous as Mercedes’s but different in its own way. And how poetic does that sound? Two brides sitting out on the balcony of their California penthouse, both just as stunning as the other, but there are distinct differences that make up their own unique beauty.
Sugar took the white icing and red-crumbed covered fork out of her mouth and spoke, taking Mercedes out of her thoughts. “You know,” she said and put the utensil down, “at first it seemed like such a greedy thing to do, but I’m glad we decided to have these two heart-shaped cakes catered to us for after the wedding.”
Mercedes stared at her cake— this heart-shaped cake with a burgundy inside that looked all too similar to blood, his blood.
She stabbed her fork into it, right in the middle, and scooped a piece out to eat. The cake was delicious, some of the best red velvet she ever had, and although she’d never tell her auntie this, but it was possibly better than hers!
Mercedes nodded, but she wasn’t looking at Sugar. Instead, brown eyes were focused on the hole right in the center of her dessert, the small red cake pieces coming out from the inside… as Mercedes kept staring, it almost started to form as the oozing blood coming out of—
Thump-thump… thump-thump
The sound… she’s hearing it again. It happened earlier… The same sound of a heartbeat carried through Mercedes’s ears as she slow danced with Sugar to “I Will Always Love You,” and even sometime before that, when she saw Rachel put a wedding gift on the table with small tears coming down her face.
But this wasn’t making any sense! Why and how? It’s not like she was out of her mind, no, no, no… yeah, she was perfectly sane. Of course she was, because only a right-minded person would be able to design a wedding as fabulous as theirs.
So why was she hearing his heart that could no longer beat? And even if his heart still could, how would she be able to hear if it was buried miles away back in Ohio?
Yes… it was hidden away where Sugar had assured Mercedes no one would be able to find it, right under the stage of the William McKinley High School auditorium. Even further down under than that, beneath a floorboard they had managed to find with a heavy prop that hadn’t been used in years on top of it.
Mercedes suddenly felt a hand on hers, and this time she turned her head towards Sugar. It’s been a long day, but Sugar’s auburn hair was stilled wonderfully in a side updo.
“I would ask a penny for your thoughts,” Sugar began as she put her fork down and shifted her fluffy pink bathrobe around herself, “but I won’t because first of all, I only carry credit cards on me now and I can most likely guess what you’re thinking about.”
Thump-thump… thump-thump…
“It feels different this time,” Mercedes told her. She tucked a piece of hair that was done in long, loose deep, waves behind her head.
“How so?” Sugar asked.
“Because I don’t just see Jesse’s heart from when we…” Mercedes trailed off, giving Sugar a ‘Well, you know’ shrug and hand gesture.
“Yeah,”
Mercedes continued. “It’s like I’m starting to hear it, too… as if it’s right here with us.”
Sugar blinked. “That’s not possible, though.”
“I know!” Mercedes cried, a little too loud, she thought, as if the busy streets below of Los Angeles could hear her from way up.
She stood up from her seat and went over to the small frosted glass cabinet filled with outdoor throw blankets. Sugar’s eyes watched her every move. Mercedes knelt down to open the door and pick one out, a dark blue one, she decided.
“It’s getting chilly; we should start heading to bed soon.” Mercedes got up and walked towards the patio loveseat couch and sat back down next to Sugar. She wrapped the dark blue throw blanket around both of them.
Sugar snuggled closer to Mercedes’s side. “Do you think it’s regret coming back to haunt us? Well,” Sugar paused for a second before speaking again, “mainly you, I guess, since you’re the one hearing things.”
There was a moment of silence…
Thump-thump… thump-thump…
“That’s the thing, though,” Mercedes said quietly and leaned her head against Sugar’s. The long white veil was now sliding over Mercedes’s face; she didn’t even bother to push it away. “I don’t regret it,” she shrugged. “Matter of fact, at that moment, I felt like it had to be done. Still do.”
It was June, and about a month before Mercedes and Sugar were supposed to get married. There was still so much they had to get done for their special day, but they figured taking a weekend out of that wouldn’t hurt too much.
That’s all it was… just a few days of seeing their friends at the New Directions reunion, seeing familiar faces and hearing familiar voices… and an all too familiar one.
Every time he spoke, Mercedes heard it: “You’re not a star. You’re just a girl who can really sing.”
But why? Those weren’t even the words coming out of his mouth, at least she thought. In actuality, they hardly acknowledged each other. Was it because she hasn’t heard him in so long, and that was the only fathomable thing she could hear him say?
It had to be his eye— there was a look in Jesse St. James’s eye every time they crossed paths. Mercedes saw it… it looked like disbelief.
Disbelief that despite his claims from before, Mercedes was actually a star and she was NOT lazy. She would not have a record deal with a new album release if that were the case.
“Whenever you’d see his face, all you could remember were those words he said to you back in your junior year?” Sugar confirmed.
“Yeah.” Mercedes nodded. “I couldn’t stand it; it drove me mad.”
Hate… hatred was what Mercedes felt. Hate and anger: every time their eyes met, it took over her.
Just plain disbelief in that gaze….
But that would be the last sign of life Jesse would ever show in his eyes, doubt, and this time confusion, while looking at her. It wasn’t exactly planned; it sort of happened on the whim. But if you were to ask Mercedes, or even Sugar, it sort of worked out.
It was the last day of the New Directions reunion, on a Sunday at that. Some of the former members left early, a few had plane rides to catch, but quite a bit of them stayed until the last moments.
Jesse was one of them.
Mercedes was just heading out, ready for the day to be over with. It was great to see everyone again, but she had a life in Los Angeles waiting for her return. Besides, she’d see them again in just a month.
And that’s when she saw him through an open auditorium door. Just waltzing around the stage, inspecting and checking things out as if they required his approval. But there was a particular spot he stopped to stand in.
A spot with a sandbag right up above.
“I still don’t think I’d be able to give anyone a straight answer as to why I did it,” Mercedes said. She looked over the balcony fence, straight ahead to the bright colorful lights of the city shining in these late hours.
“But all I know is that I felt like it had to be done.”
She watched him for what felt like an hour, although it wasn’t. But then it was over in a moment; his life and the suspense leading to it all were done. Just a quick scurry backstage, a cry of “What are you doing?!” as Mercedes untied the knot.
“All Jesse could do was barely lift his head up to see the sandbag come plummeting down,” Mercedes recalled
“And then that’s when I made my entrance,” Sugar told her, as if Mercedes weren’t there.
“Right,” Mercedes laughed.
Emotions were running high, and the one Mercedes felt the most in that moment was humor at the irony. The more she continued to think about it, the funnier it seemed.
This very same stage, albeit not in the same spot, where Jesse St. James had caused Mercedes Jones hurt all those years ago, is where pain would be coming right back at him at full force.
How could she not laugh? Maybe she felt a bit of relief, too, because who knows if Jesse was going around talking shady about her to anyone else? Mercedes wouldn’t put it past him.
But then panic started to settle… yes, he was gone; that’s what Mercedes wanted. But he was still dead!
Then Sugar came in, probably wondering what was taking her so long to get in the car. To Mercedes’s comfort, she hadn’t run away screaming for help. She just stood there with raised eyebrows until deciding to ask what happened.
So Mercedes told her everything.
And then Sugar had helped her… with everything.
“He wasn’t as heavy as I thought he would be, they totally lied about that dead weight stuff.” Sugar said and picked up her fork to get another scoop of cake.
“It was probably just adrenaline,” Mercedes shrugged. “You can lift a car on that stuff.”
Going out to the hallway wasn’t an option. Anyone could come by, and there were cameras.
Sugar gave Mercedes’s thigh a reassuring squeeze. “I know I’ve said this a million times, but you still do not have to worry about hallway cameras last seeing you and Jesse going to the auditorium. When you have a dad like mine, supportive and wealthy, you can pretty much ask for anything.”
“And I thank God every day for that,” Mercedes said flat out. One look at her could tell you she wouldn’t take that for granted. “But it still amazes me how Al knows people who can just break into a school and erase security footage without getting caught.”
“What can I say?” Sugar laughed. “My dad is just that powerful.”
Their best bet was carrying him under the stage, but his body could still be found. And so could the fingerprints on his clothing if his body were.
Jesse’s body has to be disposed of; it just had to!
Luckily for them, they found a small trapdoor. And in that moment of distress, Mercedes could only thank God that he was looking out for her. The room was dimly lit with stage props just about everywhere, it should be damn near impossible to find anything.
Dust and cobwebs were hanging from the low ceiling. The trapdoor itself was under a medium-sized but heavy wooden man-made cutout that’s supposed to resemble the front of a house. Neither of them had the slightest clue as to what it was used for, but if the spiders crawling over it and the tiny holes most likely from termites were anything to go by, it was for a show that hadn’t been performed in years. Probably before Mr. Schue even attended there.
So they moved it with great difficulty, a few splinters here and there, but that was the least of their worries.
Now the main issue was that the trapdoor was too small for a grown man’s body. It was alright in height but not enough in width. There was also an old hand saw that still held its own. Firm and sturdy.
Mercedes shook her head. “Never would I ever imagine doing something like that in my life. When we had to dissect frogs in biology class one time, I almost ran out the room.”
Sugar gave Mercedes a small smile. “Maybe my phase of watching ‘My Strange Addiction’ for years has made me immune to this sort of stuff, but I actually didn’t mind.”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” Sugar nodded. “It reminded me of when we were in the Trouble Tones and we played dodgeball against the New Directions. Remember that Rory boy? And the way we plummeted those dodgeballs at him that caused him to start bleeding? It all felt so thrilling.”
“Well, I didn’t throw any dodgeballs at him, but yeah… I remember,” Mercedes said.
If Mercedes had the power to just vanish this body right on the spot, she would’ve done it. But unfortunately, super powers don’t exist. And it’s a shame that they don’t, because she very much would’ve preferred that over what they were about to do next.
“We should cut over the hole in the floor so that way any blood that leaks would fall in there,” Sugar suggested and lined up the head and neck over it.
“But don’t we have to cut a certain way? Or else blood will start splatting everywhere?” Mercedes questioned.
“You're right,” Sugar noted, “but I don’t know how to do that. There has to be a blanket or something in here… just find one to hold it over where I’m cutting so the blanket can catch it.”
Mercedes let out a deep sigh.
“Ok.”
Sugar gave herself an imaginary pat on the back. “That was one of the smartest ideas I’ve ever had!” she said with glee.
“Barely,” Mercedes scoffed. “It worked somewhat, but my clothes got stained… the blood still won’t come out, and it was a designer dress.”
Mercedes tried not to look; her job was to just hold the blanket. Just enough to prevent this room from looking like a crime scene, but still allow Sugar to poke her head around to see what she’s doing.
After a while, Mercedes decided to take a peek. Sugar had to be almost done by now, and there was no doubt Rachel was looking around for Jesse. They were on a time crunch here!
And when Mercedes did look, Jesse was completely unrecognizable. The skin on his once handsome face was dull and lifeless. His head was still full of hair, but it was dark and completely drenched in crimson red. Mercedes could only assume Sugar had difficulty getting the hang of this at first, because Jesse’s face was mutilated with improper cuts and gashes all around. Even his nose was almost sliced off.
“I think I’m gonna throw up,” Mercedes gagged.
“Please don’t,” Sugar grunted and continued sawing away.
“Thank goodness you handled that the way you did,” Mercedes sighed. “I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done if you weren’t there.”
But thankfully Sugar was almost done.
“All I have to do is finish cutting his chest in half— it really looks bigger up close. Then we can clean up, put everything back, and get out of here,” Sugar said with a heavy breath.
His chest….
“Is that…?” Mercedes asked quietly.
“His heart? Yeah…”
Thump-thump… thump-thump…
She can hear it, even though she shouldn’t. A human heart cut out of a body lying underground in an old, dark, and dusty room shouldn’t be heard by anyone.
Was she insane? But she couldn’t be— after all, she was still a functioning member of society. The way she’s planning her songs for another album, with steady thoughts and precise consideration, can only be done by someone with a healthy mind.
“Mercedes…”
“Yes?” Mercedes responded.
“I just thought about it,” Sugar said. “If it’s not regret coming back to haunt you then, maybe it’s nerves?”
Mercedes frowned. “Nerves about what? I-I-I thought no one would find out—“
“I know,” Sugar interrupted, “but it’s been a month since then, and they still think Jesse has just gone missing. So if any of his family, especially Rachel, who we all know would stop at nothing, have any hope of him being alive, then they’ll continue to try and find him. Like who knows when they’ll start to search every inch of that school?”
“I thought about that, but what does that have to do with me hearing heartbeats?” Mercedes wondered
“Because maybe it’s the possibility of getting caught that’s haunting you?” Sugar said
It was quiet, aside from the rushing cars below, but that didn’t matter right now.
They just stared at each other. The gaze was intense, and Sugar didn’t say anything else; she didn’t have to. Instead, she reached over to her phone and unlocked it. Before Mercedes could ask what she was doing, Sugar held her phone up to Mercedes’s face.
Contact: Best father in the world 👨🏻
Mercedes shook her head in disbelief. “What?”
Sugar’s thumb hovered over the green call button. “Just one word and I can ask.”
“Ask for what?”
“For their deaths to look like an accident,” Sugar said bluntly, as if Mercedes were being slow on the uptake.
“For whose death?”
“Rachel’s and—“
“Woah, woah, woah,” Mercedes sputtered. She shot up out of her seat and started walking back and forth. Her arms covered in purple satin pjs were hugged around her torso.
Sugar watched her pace. “It was just a suggestion…” Sugar said quietly and put her elbow against the back of the couch to lean her head against her hand.
Mercedes stopped in her tracks to gawk at her. “But why would you suggest that?” Mercedes blustered; complete exasperation was in her voice.
“Because if anyone is going to get us caught, then it would be Rachel, and Jesse’s loved ones. And if we are, then I don’t think even my dad could get us out of it.”
Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Sugar carried on. “All of this would be gone,” she lazily gestured to the area around them. "instead of lounging in a penthouse with silk pajamas, we’d be sitting in an ugly stone building with even uglier orange outfits.”
“… That is true,” Mercedes said meekly. “And then I won’t…”
“You wouldn’t be a star anymore.”

👉👈 can we get more sugar and mercedes head canons?
yes you sure can!!
(here’s part 1 if anybody missed it & wants to check it out)
- mercedes is the only person that knows that sugar’s dad works for the mafia 🤪🤪🤪
- mercedes helps sugar become a tolerable person & calls her out when she says something rude.
- sugar boycotts watching ‘west side story’ since mercedes wasn’t cast as maria 💅
- sugar is always able to get them front row seats at concerts. mercedes insists on paying her for at least a portion of the ticket, but sugar is like “money has no meaning to me.”
- whenver sugar sleeps over at mercedes’s house on saturday nights, she goes to church with mercedes the next day. she drops a huge wad of cash into the donation basket that gets passed around during mass.
- sugar practically lives at mercedes’s house. sugar’s mansion is usually empty, which gets really lonely (although she would never admit that she doesn’t like being in her big house by herself) (she needs to be constantly surrounded by people or else she’ll go crazy)
- mercedes and sugar sleep in the same bed and cuddle a bunch 🥺👉👈
- sugar throws mercedes a surprise 18th birthday party. another party was thrown when mercedes got her recording contract, and another one when mercedes graduates. sugar just finds any excuse to throw a party and celebrate her best friend.
- mercedes invites sugar to her house for holidays, since sugar’s dad is usually gone on business trips (sugar and her dad celebrate holidays when he comes back from the trips, but it’s still nice to have someone to celebrate thanksgiving with on the day of)
- sugar usually doesn’t cry because she’s “too pretty to be sad” BUT she sobs when she says goodbye to mercedes when she leaves to los angeles.
- sugar has a house in l.a., but it’s relatively far from where mercedes lives. sugar convinces her dad to buy a second house in the city so she can be less than 10 minutes from mercedes.
- she takes monthly trips to california (bc what is money) and shows mercedes around southern california, since she knows the area from family trips.
- sugar takes mercedes to rodeo drive and treats mercedes to some designer clothes/bags.
- in return, mercedes shows sugar the less expensive spots of los angeles & what spots shes discovered on her own.
- when mercedes is showing sugar around, she refuses to let sugar pay for anything.
imagine mercedes and sugar being the maid of honor at each others weddings 🥺🥺🥺
so quinncedes and sugarcedes are practically canon. ty amber riley 💕
