i canāt help but notice this fandomās attitude towards bree vs how they treat sebastian. and iām saying this as someone who does like sebastian (if it wasnāt obvious by now, i like problematic and awful characters)
the both of them didnāt appear in that many episodes, but they still had that antagonistic role towards the members of the glee club. awful things were done by them, and awful things came out of their mouths, but with sebastian people eat it up while just reducing bree to an āoff-brand santanaā
and the only reason the show and fans call bree an off-brand santana because theyāre both woc close to the same shade⦠because neither santana nor bree was the only bitchy cheerleaders to act like they was running shit
ābut breeās rantāā no⦠if anything, iād compare that rant and the way bree talks to chanel oberlin from scream queens, and thatās a whole different show. bree and chanel both have that condescending, trolling, but kinda cheerful tone
also, sebastian was sort of like jesse in a different font, but no one is calling him sebastian st. smythe. and plus, jesse does have more of an impact in the show, but sebastian gets brought up way more
i guess you can bring up the redemption sebastian had, but thatās the last thing anyone ever talks about with him. and after that whole pregnancy scare bree had with jake, and when she has called out his behavior, i do think she couldāve had some reflection after that. maybe we couldāve seen if the writers didnāt banish her to the backrooms
iām not saying that anyone has to like bree, i can see why people wouldnāt, but iām also not gonna act like the way society treats the problematic behavior of white men vs. black women doesnāt also cause a bias when it comes to watching tv
this is also an issue that i see with antagonistic black characters in general. when they arenāt all sunshine and rainbows to be the supporting and/or mammy role to the nonblack characters, and actually serve their purpose as a villain, especially if theyāre a threat to a white character, then people have no issues with making them be seen as less than and awful. but let it be a conveniently white character who behaves that same way, even if they have like two seconds of screen time, then theyāre worshipped. they have so many headcanons and edits of them; you have people saying, āwait, they are actually so iconic š.ā they have 100 different sob stories to excuse their behavior (no, i donāt think sebastian had abusive parents. he comes from a wealthy and privileged background, his ego is huge, and he was just not a good person. he literally used his position of power via his FATHER to threaten santana).
tl;dr: you would see a whole different attitude towards bree if she was an attractive white man
