30 things that probably you didn’t know about Suits
Hello guys! The following article was originally written into Italian (here) by saralilith and me for our Suits fanpage, Suits Episodes. We decided to translate it into English for all the foreign fans who might want to know something more about Suits. We hope you appreciate the idea.
How much do you know about Suits? Or I should say: how much you don’t know about it? Let’s shed some light on it.
Here’s a bunch of facts, revelations, leaks that you maybe don’t know about our favourite show and cast.
1. Suits’ pilot, that goes on for one hour and thirty minutes, was the only episode shot in New York, after that, they started shooting in Toronto. The amazing views that are shown in the episodes (like the ones we see in firm’s offices and Harvey’s house) are actually posters. As further proof of that, you can see how different is the firm in the pilot when compared to the firm we see in others episodes. Are you surprised?
2. At first they chose another title for the show, that was going to be: A Legal Mind.
3. About that, we’d like you to notice how the name of the show (Suits) is a word game between “suit” as in lawsuit and “suit” as in clothing suit.
4. Harvey’s character is inspired by producer’s Aaron Korsh boss, when he worked as investment banker (the exact same job that Mike does in the beginning of fourth season). The boss’ name was Harvey. But we can sure say that Harvey (the character) gets his nature directly from his “daddy”.
5. During the castings, they chose Mike’s actor (Patrick J. Adams) before choosing Harvey’s. Korsh said he just needed one look at Gabriel Macht to know that he would have been the perfect Harvey, even before auditioning him.
6. Actors Sarah Rafferty and Gabriel Macht have been best friends for over twenty years. They first met in 1993 at Williamson Theatre Festival. Sarah described her first impression about Gabriel with these words: “you were sitting behind me at the theatre, I looked back and I thought your smile was like Cheshire Cat’s smile”. Gabriel said his first impression about Sarah was like this:
7. Since they shoot in Toronto, the entire cast had to move to Canada. As a Canadian, Patrick offered Gabriel to live in his own parents’ house. But since Gabriel didn’t fit in young Patrick’s bed, he rent a flat with Sarah. Can you imagine those guys as roommates?
8. At first Donna’s character didn’t existed. Gabriel suggested to create the secretary’s character and he eventually proposed Sarah for the role, ‘cause he thought she was “perfect for it”.
9. Sarah and DB Woodside (Jeff Malone) went to college together. They first met in 1996 at Yale.
10. Zoe Lawford, that we met in second season whose character worked in the firm and dated Harvey, was played by Jacinda Barrett, Gabriel’s wife. And that’s not all! Harvard’s professor Gerard is played by Stephen Macht, Gabriel’s father. And you probably know Troian Bellisario, who played Claire in episode 13 of season four, is Patrick’s fiancé.
Gabriel looks exactly like his mother. Which relative will he bring on set next?
11. Producers Aaron Korsh and Jeff Eastin said something about a crossover between their two shows, Suits and White Collar, but they didn’t go too far with the idea due to locations issues. They shoot Suits in Toronto, while White Collar’s set was in New York. That’s too bad, I think it would have been a great crossover. I mean… Harvey and Neal together: epic!
12. Actress Gina Torres (our queen Jessica Pearson) is a mezzo soprano. As we can read on Wikipedia, she started her artistic career as a singer, taking parts in theatrical performances and singing in a gospel choir.
13. Meghan Markle created a blog: The Tig that refers to lifestyles, food, travels, books, fashion, etcetera. Rachel’s passion for the food descends from Meghan’s tastefulness.
14. Suits’ producers asked Meghan to pose naked for most of all Suits’ episodes. The actress declined, claiming that she would act in underwear or covered in sheets.
15. All the quotes and references to Game of Thrones are probably due to Korsh’ passion for the show. In fact, he said it’s one of his favourite shows. Moreover, in Suits’ season three were casted Game of Thrones’ actors Michelle Fairley (Ava Hessington/Catelyn Stark) and Conleth Hill (Edward Darby/Lord Varys).
Be careful, Harvey! We don’t want the White Walkers in the firm!
16. Patrick’s love for photography descends from his father, who was a journalist. Patrick said he grew up with cameras, and he owns more than 60 camera models. In January of 2015 in New York he had a photographic exhibition about Suits’ behind the scenes, Behind the Lens. The money from the exhibit went to an association that helps cancer patients.
17. Gabriel admitted he was arrested for “jaywalking”. He didn’t say exactly what he did wrong, but the thing is that his wife Jacinda had to pay him out of prison. What a mess!
18. Eric Roberts, who plays billionaire Charles Forstman in season four, is the real Julia Roberts’ elder brother.
Their smile comes from the family!
19. Popular Matrix’s actor Lawrence Fishburne is Gina Torres’ husband. They met on the set of Matrix Reloaded and they currently act together on NBC’s Hannibal, where they play a married couple.
20. Even if Jessica seem to be much older than Harvey, Gina is just 45, only two years older than Gabriel and Sarah (43) and one year older than Rick Hoffman (44). Obviously Patrick and Meghan are the youngest, they’re both 33.
21. Gabriel first part was in the movie Why would I lie?, when he was just 8 and he used the stage name Gabriel Swann.
22. Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams are Suits’ co-producers. Both of them directed one episode of season four (Patrick directed episode 14 and Gabriel episode 11) for their first time.
23. Do you notice something, or should I say someone, strange in this picture?
Nothing? I’ll explain. The guy on the right is Aaron Korsh. The creator did a cameo in episode 1 of season two. In that scene, the firm were welcoming back Daniel Hardman.
24. J. in Patrick’s name is for Johannes, German version of Giovanni (In English: John).
25. Basically every actor appeared in CSI. Well, Rick Hoffman played in every CSI show. In fact he was in CSI: Las Vegas, CSI: NY and CSI: Miami.
26. Patrick and Gabriel admitted that they googled “Marvey” and that they were shocked when they found Marvey’s fan fictions.
27. Although Mike and Logan hate each other’s guts on the show, actors Patrick J. Adams and Brendan Hines are close friends. If you follow them on Instragram, you should see their nonsensical selfies.
28. Of course you remember the school trip road trip in episode 13 of season four. Patrick said on Twitter that even if Gabriel was behind the wheel, no one was actually driving. As we can see in his tweet, they were inside a “truck” and they had to spend 6 hours seated in the car. As we can see in season four’s bloopers, they also had a great time.
29. Speaking of episode 13, Korsh revealed that the scene where Mike tells Louis that “he doesn’t have to look at the back of his own stupid, fat, balding head” was completely improvised. Patrick invented that line but the scene was so good that they decided to keep it. That explains Gabriel’s reaction, ‘cause he laughed. Bravo to Rick Hoffman who stays unperturbed in the scene, really perfect for the role.
30. Do you remember that Mike’s grammy lived in a nursing home? The original idea was for her to get the Alzheimer, to highlight the difference between her lack of memory and Mike’s eidetic memory. But then the authors decided not to use this idea because Mike had already been trough a lot. Even so, he had too many dramas anyway.
Our list ends here. Did you know all of this? Are you surprised for any of it? Let us know.
