Catrin: changing the conversation, 2021 - by Sujata Setia, Indian/English
While Kant insists we must never treat rational beings merely as means, in practice, every person inevitably acts as a means to their own survival and flourishing. Survival demands instrumental action using resources, making exchanges, pursuing goals which means we inevitably use ourselves as means in many ways.
The problem is that you are both a means and an end at the same time. Biologically and naturally, you exist as a means to survive; your body, instincts, and drives push you to preserve your life. This is the undeniable part of being a living creature, shared with all animals.
At the same time, philosophy challenges you to see yourself as an end in yourself ; to recognize that beyond mere survival, you can reflect, judge, and choose how to live. The key difference is awareness. You don’t stop being a means to your own survival, but you become conscious of it and can decide how much control the survival drive has over your life.
The trick and the real human challenge is to hold both truths together without denying either: you are the prisoner and the guard of your survival instincts. Liberation means seeing this clearly and learning to live with that tension, not by escaping it, but by managing it with awareness.

I love multi media photography and physical editing. The texture and the symbolism in these cuts are so thought out and precise. The cool-toned photos with the bright red background is a beautiful contrast from the stoicism of the woman to the pain of the cuts.
