SUMMER BEERS
READ IT IN 2 minutes
So August 1st hey? Ugh, but it’s okay we have lots of summer left. Why don’t we kick of this month with my FAV summer beers.
If you’re not a huge beer drinker, this post is for you. We love a crisp glass of rosé, bubbly or vino but sometimes an ice cold refreshing beer is what we need while boating, floating the river or lounging on a rooftop.
We also want to ENJOY a beer, not just tolerate it. These summer beers are extremely flavourful. Think white peach, coriander and passionfruit, grapefruit, cinnamon horchata and berries.
FUN RIGHT?!
x BUD LIGHT RADLER
This is perfect because it is stocked at pretty much every liquor store, making it easy to pick up when you’re with a large group heading to the lake and only making ONE stop. It’s your typical grapefruit radler, similar to a stiegl radler. So good.
x VILLAGE WIT
My go to when hanging out on a patio in Calgary. Village is a local brewery and is usually supplied at most of the local pubs and bars in the city. It’s light and easy to drink, especially on a hot day.
x VILLAGE SQUEEZE
Same brewery, similar taste. Light with a smack of berry. I LOVE this brew.
x PHILLIPS SOLARIS WHITE PEACH ALE
I find a lot of fruit beers don’t have enough of a fruit taste for me. This one does. You definitely taste the white peach flavour and it is awesome. Fun fact, Cibo in Calgary has this one on tap.
x BLUE MOON CINNAMON HORCHATA
SOOO GOOD. Like dessert. Cinnamon Horchata. I freakin’ LOVE cinnamon. It tastes like a cinnamon bun but is a beer and maybe that sounds incredibly weird and gross but it really isn’t. Give it a try the next time you’re in the liquor store and comment here to let me know what you think.
x WILD ROSE PONDEROSA GOSE
THIS SUMMER’S BEER. It’s currently stocked in our fridge. The boys AND the girls love it. It’s a fabulous combination of coriander, salt and passionfruit. It’s irresistible. TRUST ME. You have to try it.
x HELL’S BASEMENT BOXCAR COMFORTS BLONDE ALE
This brewery in Medicine Hat is nailing it. They know their beer. Okay my absolutely FAV is their blonde ale. It’s PERFECTION. I also love that on their website it “pairs well with: inside jokes”. HELLO, THAT’S RIGHT UP OUR ALLEY! An easy patio pounder to enjoy this long weekend.
x HELL’S BASEMENT ALL HOPS FOR A BASEMENT IPA
The boys. Okay okay okay I do not LOVE an IPA. It’s the hops flavour. BUT I wanted to throw this one in for all my readers that love a hoppy IPA. It’s probably the smoothest drinking one that I’ve tried. They claim that “it delivers a crisp tropical blast with foresty pine” and it definitely delivers.
BEER HACK
OKAY BEER HACK
I did a Village Brewery tour once and they shared this amazing beer hack. Mix the Wit and the Squeeze and you get a WEEZY. It’s my favourite. Light, fruity and refreshing. I absolutely LOVE this one.
So those are my FAV summer beers!! Perfect timing, now we can stock up for August long weekend!!
Cheers my dears.

Best American Craft Beers Suitable For The Summer Season
Street Traffic. Oxygen contamination. Earthquakes. So why, at your local sports bar, are seemingly half the patrons transplants from New Boston, York and Chicago pulling for their hometown teams and lamenting "how great it is back home? " Three ideas. Bikinis. Board shorts. Beer. One other idyllic summer is here below in L . A . and it's the right time to love our country's best local weather by using asmooth and crisp, light-weight-bodied American Craft Beer Brewing. So we consulted with three of the best beer minds in the region for guidance as to which beers to savor this summer.
Gabe Gordon helms Beachwood Barbecue in Seal off Beach and will open up Beachwood Bar-b-que and Brewery in down-town Long Seashore in July. Tony Yanow has the hideaway referred to as Tony's Darts Out in Burbank, and will opened Mohawk Bend, with 70 faucets in Echo Playground, on July 28. Martin Svab may be the beer savant at Naja's Spot in Redondo Shore, a waterfront jump club that includes a sheer 88 faucets and 3 x that lots of bottles.
We questioned every single 3 to offer us their 10 favorite summer-enjoying beers, then mixed their listings with your individual, then weighted these with the search positions of countless beer geeks who "class" individual beers on beeradvocate.com. If not scientific, We're nothing. Switch the page for the outcomes: the 10 greatest American craft beers for summer.
10. Allagash White (Portland, Maine). A slightly fruity, refreshing Belgian-design wit and only 5Percent abv so that you can enjoy it the entire day, like Kool-Support, only technique much better.
9. Victory Prima Pils (Downingtown, PA). A German-design pilsner hailing out of the vintage Pennsylvania brewery. A hunger-sessionable and quencher at 5.3Per cent abv.
8. Ommegang Hennepin (Cooperstown, NY). A fantastic farmhouse saison that lighting fixtures increase your mouth with a touch of spruce and lemon or lime which causes this an excellent beer to counterbalance the heat. At 7.7Percent abv, this can sneak through to you.
7. Lagunitas A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale (Petaluma, CA). Acrisp and silky, grain beer that is oh yeah so befitting for slightly sumpin' summer. It goes downward so steady that you just would never reckon it appears in at 7.5% abv.
6. Strand 24th Street Pale Ale (Torrance, CA). An excellent soft this is the only community beer to produce the Top 10, and offered at most quality beer cafes in town on account of Abundant Marcello, also called the toughest working guy in the L.A. beerbiz. As for the pale itself, we would say to brewer Joel Elliott, "You done good, son! "
5. Dogfish Head Festina Peche (Milton, Delaware). A brilliant uncomplicated-consuming BerlinerWeisse style beer brewed with peaches. Only 4.5Per cent abv in order to consume it 'til the cows come home, always keeping in thoughts that people don't possess cows in L.A.
4. Moonlight Brewing Reality Czeck (Santa Rosa, CA). This absurdly-drinkable pilsner from your prodigy of "the Unabrewer" Brian Hunt presents a dilemma for Angelenos. Bad news. You may only realize its on write at Beachwood Barbecue, and only on scarce times then. Good news. This calls for a romantic summer end of the week in San Francisco. Motel not added.
3. Drake's 1500 Pale Ale (San Leandro, CA). Without all the alcohol, though this pale is more like a light, hoppy IPA. In truth, it was subsequently primarily created as being a sessionable IPA. Only 5.5% abv and so good on the sunlit day together with the sugary aroma of pine and citrus. Most likely the best soft ale in the world. Ample reported.
2. Alesmith Yulesmith -Summer (San Diego, Ca, CA). Go over Christmas in July, the unhealthy-butt brewers at Alesmith in San Diego give you a double IPA model with their Yulesmith getaway beer each July fourth. This deceptively 9.5% abv hop bomb is very damn excellent it's appropriate up there while using bikini, the beachfront, and the guys of summer.
And the main craft beer for summer season? Change the web site.
1. Russian River Supplication (Santa Rosa, CA). From Vinnie Cilurzo, the Wizard of Santa Rosa, the John Wood made of Cali's top notch brewers, this brilliant brown ale is aged in French oak Pinot Noir barrels with sour cherries from Paradise. Yes, boys and girls, the main beer for summer can be a sour and sour beers are an obtained taste. But in your holy pilgrimage from Corona using a lime to Mecca, this beer is Mecca. Be brave and there are actually your fate, Skywalker.
As a bonus for reading this far, kind of like when they stick a cool outtake in the credits for the troopers who stick it out through the credits, Gabe Gordon also offered his top three European beers for summer: Cantillon Fou' Foune, Fantome Saison and Leipziger Gose. All of them are, simply put, spectacular.

Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Hoppiness
The “H” is “O” across our fair state and with that comes the time for more sessionable beers. We wanted to brew something that still has character and heart while also being refreshing to the palate. Our new brew Americana Golden Ale, at 4.8% ABV is just that.
Our Golden Ale embodies the American dream of -
“Life ,Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".
The Heart of the American Microbrew revolution, this is a beer for everyone who has dared to dream big. This approachable Golden Ale has aromas of sweet malt and doughy white wheat followed by a crisp and clean body that finishes slightly dry with a subtle citrus Hop character.
Look for this new Barley Mow brand at your favorite bars, restaurants and on draft at our tavern.
It's That Time Of Year
As the weather finally warms up, we’ll finally have the opportunity to open up beers that were meant to accompany the warmer weather. This is good news for people like me, who like to try different beers. Gone are the heavy stouts, ales, and lagers of winter, and here are the frosty beverages of Spring and Summer.
That brings new beers and old favorites that have been dormant or being brought back to the forefront by their seasonal release. Two such beers that inspire the hoopla with their releases are Bell’s Oberon and Boston Beer Company’s Summer Ale. I don’t think either of these beers are near the top of their class, but at the same time, I understand what they represent. They represent happiness, warmth, or memories. They’re sentimental beers. They’re recognized because of what you do while you’re drinking them.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve sort of toned down my love for Summer Ale. Much of this is due to my branching and trying new beers, but I do think there has been a drop in quality and an inconsistency with the product. I do love Sam Summer for sentimental reasons because to me it goes hand in hand with Boston Red Sox baseball. I want to spend an afternoon drinking Summer Ale and watching the Sox.
The quality factor is a big deal though and that goes along with becoming bigger. Boston Beer is becoming a volume producer, not a quality producer, if you don’t already qualify them as that. As a result, there’s been a mixed bag between what is on draft, what is in the bottles, and what is in the cans. My friends and I joked that the beer tasted like band-aids, but in truth, it probably tasted closer to band-aids than one would actually like to acknowledge. It’s safe to say what was once the king for me is no longer. That’s why I’ve been looking at other beers.
The one thing about craft beer is that certain styles are incredibly trendy. By this, I mean that we see a massive influx of a specific style of beer. We’ve seen breweries make black IPAs, barrel-aged everythings, sours, what is selling is what everyone wants to make. Right now, the trendy thing is session IPAs. Now, I must say that I’m not a fan of these beers. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t good beers. It means that the style isn’t for me. I like more beer, I like more flavor. IPAs are my favorite style, but sessions are just too weak for me. Why would I want less of something?
But I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t talk about them. I think sessions are a great and growing market within craft. It’s sort of a good bridge between the light stuff that the bulk brewers make and the heavier stuff that most craft breweries are known for. I fully acknowledge that certain craft beers are overwhelming and if you’re not used to the flavors, it can be overwhelming and off putting. Sessions can serve as an introduction to these heavier stuff. Like alright, this session IPA is interesting. I want more. I’ll try the regular IPA. Then I’ll try the imperial/double IPA. That sort of thing.
There are a lot of big names getting into the session IPA game. There are some breweries, even, that have made their gravy by specializing in session beers, like Notch, whose Session IPA “Left Of The Dial” is one of the better versions that I’ve had. The big names are coming though. It’s funny because “big” in the world of craft beer means that they have distribution. They’re able to get their beers out and they have the production capabilities meet that demand. However, they’re dwarfed by the big brewers in every way.
At the same time, brands like Dogfish, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, Stone, they’re becoming household names. They’re well known. The first two big Session IPAs that I’ve seen are from Lagunitas and Founders. The Lagunitas Day Time IPA was actually the first I had of the style and it’s really well done from a dry hoping and floral perspective. Founders was really the first big name to go into it full time with All Day. Others are scrambling to get a piece of the market, like Stone, with Go To, and Firestone Walker, with Easy Jack. Again, these beers sacrifice taste for lightness and that works in the summer time. With this new influx, I’m sure there will be good one that are worth drinking on the regular. However, I do think there are some solid Summer beers out there.
My go to Summer style is wheat beers. I love hefeweizens and wits. They’re light complexion, which is the most important thing as far as not weighing you down like heavier ales or stouts tend to do. You can’t mention hefeweizens without talking about Weihenstephaner. It is a gorgeous combination of a golden haze and pungent banana flavors. It is the standard and honestly, it dwarfs anything else out there. Unfortunately, it seems like this has kept many craft producers from trying to get into the market.
One of my favorite American hefeweizens is the Kellerweis from Sierra Nevada. It sort of ticks all the buckets that you’d want. It’s not too heavy from an alcohol and flavor perspective, but it has enough for you to feel satisfied.Sixpoint has their Apollo which is a filtered hefeweizen, which is also pretty solid. Another good alternative is the Brooklyner Wheat. These wheat beers toe that careful line of being weather friendly, but being ful flavored effectively.
The other big style that I thoroughly have grown to enjoy is witbiers. To be honest, hefeweizens and wits have a lot in common in that they’re both wheat beers, but wits have more of a Belgian connection. The biggest Belgian in New England is obviously Allagash. That’s the old reliable of the bunch. It’s like Sierra Nevada Pale in that it’s commonly available and a result, you may down play it, but it’s always solid when you have it. It’s not my favorite anymore, but no fault of its own.
My favorite summer beer currently, and I’d encourage you to go out to the store and try some, is Newburyport Brewing Company’s Plum Island Belgian White. It comes in cans, which is obviously beach and pool friendly (since I’m a beach and pool person [shifty eyes]). It’s light, yet flavorful, and you get some nice coriander. It’s got that farmhouse-like malt flavor, but it’s smooth rather than earthy, which, to me, makes it more suiting. I’m probably going to head to the store and pick up a sixer of this when I finish this piece.
That’s my favorite summer beer, but there are a lot out there that I have to try. I’m looking forward to what’s new and I hope there are more people who take full hearted shots at making hefeweizens and wits.
What are you drinking?
It's no lie to say that I'm a hop head. IPAs and Double IPAs account for a third of my unique check-ins on Untappd. They probably account for a higher portion of my checkins overall. However, recently, I've been digging a new style recently with the nicer weather.
That new style is wheat beers.
Last night, I had Ayinger's Braü-Weisse (the umlaut is necessary). It had the familiar juicy, banana flavors, but it was light. It went down easy. It didn't lack flavor, but it wasn't heavy like IPAs can be. The Braü-Weisse isn't the only hefeweizen I've been digging lately, here's a list of a few that I've had and enjoyed:
Brooklyn Wheat Beer
Tröegs Dreamweaver Wheat
Sierra Nevada Kellerweis
Sixpoint Apollo (This is a Krystalweizen, which is a filtered hefeweizen)
Obviously, there are a lot of German breweries that make hefeweizens and I'd encourage you to try those too. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier is the standard. These are all good, light, but tasty summer beers.
