Summer things I love to do:
- Make shaved ice, obviously. Cutting up the fruit is time consuming, but the pay off is worth it. My favorite shaved ice is watermelon juice with just a bit of sea salt, or coconut and red beans.
- Set up the mist sprinkler on the clothesline so it sprays up and creates a soft rain to sit under. Even better when the breeze blows, instant relief!
- Harvesting things from the garden. Nothing like fresh grapes, tomatoes, peaches and cucumber in a bowl in the kitchen with the satisfaction that you grew them yourself.
- Canning the fruits I grew so I can enjoy them in the Fall and Winter, especially for making hot fruit punch, fruit tea and cobblers.
- Making salad from cucumbers and radishes that have been sitting in ice water all day, then turning the leftovers into overnight pickles.
- Hanging wind bells in various spots outside, but I especially like one near my bedroom window. Just hearing it catch a breeze and lightly ring is soothing, but hearing it ring a lot gets me excited since it might mean rain.
- Opening the doors and windows to bring in the cool breeze and smell of rain into the house. It's a treat during the night, because it helps me sleep better.
- Making lizard shaped bowls made of natural red clay to invite lizard spirits into the house so they can eat all the bad insects that bite and cause nightmares. Yes, it’s what children do but I still like creating them.
- Midday naps on floor cushions in front of the patio, especially after hanging out the laundry. Sometimes I wake up to my cats knocked out with me.
- Drinking ice cold barley tea or mint water straight out of the fridge.
- Eating seaweed pudding or grass jelly straight out of the fridge.
- Spraying myself with homemade body mist straight out of the fridge.
- Catching firefires and releasing them in the backyard. They only stay for a few days and eventually wander past the fence, probably back to the river again, but the sight of them for those few days are lovely.
- Catching praying mantis, caterpillars, tadpole shrimp, stick insects, geckos, cicadas, and june bugs. Don’t worry we release them again, except any cocoons, those stay with us until they hatch.
- Late night urbexing and randonauting, there's some weird stuff out in the deserts and forests of New Mexico.
- Moon viewing parties and star parties with a bonfire and food. For the whole summer we’re always looking up at the sky, and have slowly been getting into astronomy as a result.
- I invested in a projector so we can watch movies outside against the side of the house or on a makeshift screen made with a white bedsheet.
- Evenings drives to the mountain pass and making light paintings with glow sticks on long exposure. It feels good just being up there too since it’s always cooler and rain clouds collect there.
- Swimming in the river or creek and drying off under the bridge or in the shade of trees. Sometimes we just walk home wet, and by the time we get back we’re already dry.
- My brother's not much into it but I love crafting with shells and seaglass I collected on our vacations to the beach. I also like tie-dyeing and painting 'postcards' of special events in the summer.
- My bro likes photographing nature in the summer, animals are usually really active. He's also taken an interest in timelapse.
- Making lanterns from paper or punched pie tins and lighting them in the evenings. Or lighting floating candles in a large tub outside as we eat and relax.
- Going to a festival, but because of current events we make our own backyard festivals with seafood noodles, popcorn, falafel sandwiches, grilled chicken, octopus salsa and frozen cactus pear juice.
