I haven't been to a Sakamoto and Alva Noto's concert, although from all the footage I see and hear it seems an O.K. proposition. You see, there is always something off with electronic music, when it is played live. While the studio machinery offers a great deal of sonic variety with such music, it is hard to replicate it outside. Wait, actually it is too easy to do that for them, which is why many who are part of the electronica genre sound like members of a lip sync society in your usual concert halls. Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto do not fall under that observation, probably due to the fact that Sakamoto's piano is a strong instrument, whereas Alva Noto's sonic intrusions complement his melodies despite their destructive appearance. Then again, it could also be like that, cause Sakamoto took the right lessons from Yellow Magic Orchestra. Not only were they the pioneers of synthpop, they were also a rare group of this idiom whose concerts were great.
