Maybe you were already aware, but here is the famous “sumo wrestler sound effect” in full.

Episode 4B: Virt-Ed-Go
Virt-Ed-Go's title is a reference to the phrase (or the Hitchcock movie) "Vertigo." Vertigo is a subtype of dizziness, commonly linked with heights. Ed's fear of heights is used for a series of gags in this episode, because it is about building a tree house.
Um... that's weird... It's spelled "Vert-Ed-Go" on the DVD pamphlet, but "Virt" on the title card.. The correct spelling of the original word IS "vertigo," so... uh... UHHHH
Anyway, I like that the hyphens are arrows in the title card, very interesting! The image directly connects to the episode, with a kid (the clothes look like Jonny wearing cut-offs) sitting in a tree, trying to pet a bird (there is a running gag of a rude seagull in the episode), and overlooking footsteps on the ground (I guess that's because of all the walking and work the Eds did to make that tree house).
Edit 9/27/2014: This episode was partially storyboarded by Scott Diggs Underwood. It was one of his first and he's said he had a lot of fun with it!
Today, the lane only has one fence! Which I think is correct according to the official map.
The lane also has a storm drain today, and Eddy is showing off another one of his amazing season 1 talents by dangling a piece of gum on a string down the drain to catch a quarter. This opening is very similar to 'Dawn of the Eds'.
A seagull flies overhead. There are a lot of seagulls in this episode but they stop appearing after season 2. Their existence suggests that Peach Creek is near an ocean, though, and season 5 does in fact mention there being a Peach Creek shore. We finally see the ocean in the movie (though from the city shore rather than the Peach Creek shore).
Inside the storm drain looks like this:
I like that it's just dirt, since this is on a dirt road. The town clearly did not put much money into this drain, it should be concrete...
Also, there's a bone underground, which is hopefully because of a dog and not a gruesome murder.
Someone literally just dug a 3 foot pit with a 5 inch diameter, slapped a metal grate over it and called it a storm drain. HOW DID THAT CRUSHED CAN GET PAST THE GRATE? The Eds could probably just pick up the metal part from the dirt and grab this quarter.
Now that I think about it, we've never seen the lane when it's raining, it must get really gross and muddy.
Anyway, Eddy's plan is working!
IT WORKED!!!
LOOK AT EDD'S FACE.
Eddy flips the coin and does cool poses before it lands.
Here's a pretty good example of Eddy having his brother's chin in season 1...
Eddy's so cool that he even successfully flips it again to his other hand!
But then this asshole comes along:
WHAT THE HELL, BIRD?
The bird flies past a plane and Ed goes running after the bird claiming that it stole his gum (even though the quarter snapped off the gum as soon as it got past the grate).
Eddy does one of the saddest poses ever, punches the ground and screams "WHEN WILL THE TORMENT END!?" Poor Eddy, it's only been 4 episodes! "It was in the palm of my hand! WHO INVENTED BIRDS ANYWAY!?" I guess this is when the trait of him hating birds starts?
We really don't see this angle of his head a lot, I find it very interesting.
Ed's bird hunt fails, but he points out the plane.
I feel like a plane towing a sign like this is another indication that they're near a shore.
So there's a guy named Joe in Peach Creek and he owns a place called Joe's Clubhouse? Interesting...
I think this is the only real plane we ever see in Ed, Edd n Eddy. Season 1 proves to be much more lenient with vehicle appearances than later seasons.
I'm not sure why Eddy's head didn't turn into a regular penny? Or a more impressive coin? But Eddy has an idea!
They should build a clubhouse!
Eddy knows the perfect spot:
Except Kevin calls them dorks, because they're just standing around in his backyard.
Ed think this is a clubhouse, hahaha. I think this is the first appearance of Kevin's house! I love its colors.
A very on-model drawing of the cul-de-sac, although the house colors are random and the creek is green for some reason? I think this is actually the creek's first appearance! How unfortunate that it made its first appearance looking like sewage.
The closest house should be Jimmy's, then Nazz's to the right, and Jonny's is the furthest one we can see, but even if the colors were right, those aren't what their houses look like...
What is on model, though, is the 1-fence lane behind all the houses, and this creek, field, power towers, distant purple woods, and the second unfenced junkyard across the creek!
Since they found the junkyard in the last episode, Eddy thinks this would be a killer location for a clubhouse. Edd points out that it's too unsanitary, and this happens to Ed:
Told ya there'd be more seagulls! Ed says they're trying to get his cream puff.
Also, the backgrounds in this scene continue to be great, but why is the lane/cul-de-sac square on this side and round on the other?
Ed tries to throw the Hostess snack to Eddy but it just hits him in the face and gets sugar cream all over his and Edd's faces.
Next location:
This is a very vague background, but I think there's a canon mailbox outside the playground, so I'm going to say that's where this is, and not just some random chain link fence in field.
Edd finds this spot to be too cramped and hard to breathe in. Ed opens someone's junk mail.
The Eds march down a street of houses. I'm going to guess this is the street across from the playground/construction site area, since the clubhouse comes back in season 3 and appears to be behind Kevin's house, which would put it somewhere in that construction site area. Its location is always pretty unclear, though.
EDIT 5/23/2021: Scott Diggs shared his early concept art of this shot!
Yeah, that could be the lane fence, and this could be, like, a little spot of grass between the playground's woods and the construction site!
Eddy knocks Ed and Edd onto the ground and then steps over their faces, giving us THIS awkward shot:
Eddy's eye reminds me of Dr. Seuss' style.
The Eds inspect the tree.
Guess who Ed finds in a nest!
That damn quarter-stealing bird!
THIS TIME IT HAS EYEBROWS.
This screenshot gets funnier the longer I look at it. They ALL realize the situation they're in at the same time, INCLUDING THE BIRD. IT RECOGNIZES EDDY, HAHAHA
OH WOW, THIS SPLIT SECOND OF EDDY BEING MAD IS A REALLY GOOD DRAWING. That's like... exactly what his design looks like in season 2, and very close to how it looks from season 3 to the end. Eddy's rage was the key to improving the art, apparently.
Also, I like the way this bird acts like a character. Animals in EEnE generally act brain dead, but season 1 animals tend to be more expressive and interactive.
They all just stare helplessly at the bird, hahahahaha
Eddy says he hates birds, but Ed gives him this side-hug and reminds him they found a tree.
They are very weird looking in this shot.
The Eds' supplies:
"Our parents will never know they're missing." Your parents own an anvil and a tomahawk? Oh, and I just noticed a corkscrew. Hehehe, their parents drink.
A lot of these tools are clearly useless and not tools, but I just want to point out the baby bottle. What went through their mind when they decided to bring THAT to build a treehouse?
Eddy hammers the tree and we hear the sumo sound for the first time! Everybody loves the sumo sound.
Edd stops him and says trees have feelings. Is this the part of Edd's personality that names the plants in his room like they're pets? Because this sounds more like the kind of thing Jonny should say.
Eddy hits himself on the helmet with the hammer by accident and in his dazed state he agrees to Edd's idea of looking for lumber. Eddy does a sideways chicken walk to look for lumber.
UPDATE 5/23/2021: Scott Diggs shared early concept art that seems to be for an unused scene of the Eds trying to think of where to find wood, and Ed grabbing a pole.
Ed rides a jackhammer upside down. This seems like very dangerous imitatable behavior, yikes...
Ed yells "Yip yip Caillou" or something to that affect, and I have no idea what it is. It sounds like a reference to something (I don't think it's an actual reference to the children's show Caillou, but I guess we can't rule that out since it was airing in Canada for 2 years before this episode came out) but I can't understand Ed so I don't know how to search it. It gets repeated a few other times in season 1.
Jonny shows up as Eddy tries to think about wood. PLANK'S MOUTH. THAT'S NOT HOW HIS SMILE'S SUPPOSED TO LOOK, WHERE'D HE GET THAT CHEEK!?
Eddy tells Plank to quit poking him, and throws him. Jonny screams like a siren and watches helplessly.
Jonny just looks so weird in season 1.
Plank lands on Ed's face.
Jonny and Eddy race to Plank's aid.
Jonny's clearly in the lead, but somehow Eddy gets there first and no longer has a helmet.
Eddy threatens to make Plank a floorboard in their clubhouse and Edd starts to tell Eddy how little one board would help, completely missing the point of the threat.
What is wrong with the colors in some parts of this episode??? The outlines look more blue than black...
Eddy asks Jonny where they could get more wood and Jonny says Plank sees things. Eddy turns Plank around...
PLANK, WHERE DO YOU KEEP GETTING THIS CHEEK?
The Eds, Jonny, and Plank cross over some nondescript hills to find a single giant chain-link fence with some trash next to it. My headcanon is that this is an early appearance of the school's area, but I know it wasn't intended that way. I just like to be able to imagine how things place on the map.
I like the pizza box and I want to believe that's a broken computer next to it, but it's probably a broken TV.
Jonny brought them all this way for one dirty Popsicle stick.
AAAHH EDDY WHAT ARE YOU
Eddy convinces them to stop fooling around.
Somewhere in the lane, Jonny finds them a large board in the mud.
I really like everything about this shot. It just looks nice. Framing or something... Plus, Eddy's leaning on Jonny like they're best friends now.
A bunch of boards later and Ed can't move anymore.
Edd puts a car jack between Ed's legs.
And Eddy slips a skateboard under him.
Interesting lane hill...
REALLY interesting lane hill!
What does make sense: There's a field behind the lane, with electrical towers and purple woods.
What doesn't make sense: The lane doesn't have any canon paths into the other locations, there should be a creek and I don't feel like the towers should turn and the woods should be to the left. Also, this is nowhere near the tree's supposed construction site location. I suppose some weird camera angles could make sense of some of this and reposition Ed toward the construction site, but I don't know.
The skateboard slips out.
Ed is crushed.
"The maple has landed!"
Edd and Eddy laugh so awkwardly that it makes me in the audience uncomfortable. Eddy says he doesn't get it. WHY DID THIS LITTLE MOMENT HAPPEN?
Edd designs some blueprints and Eddy tells Ed to go up the tree.
Ed is scared. ):
Edd tells Eddy a plan to get Ed up the tree.
WHY ARE YOU LIFTING HIS EAR UP? HE'S NOT A DOG, HIS EAR-HOLE IS THAT LITTLE X, IT'S THE SAME DESIGN AS YOURS. Can I just say I don't understand X-ears? In season 5 there's a drawing that shows us how the hole works, but it's just so weird that I can never remember it.
Ed grabs the ground to stop Edd's pulley from getting him up there.
Eddy is so happy when it works that his tongue flops in and out of his head as he's talking. Eddy, you may want to see a doctor about that.
Eddy thinks Ed has provided their treehouse with foundation.
Edd doubts it'll work, though. EDDY, YOUR TONGUE STILL ISN'T IN YOUR HEAD.
Edd is right.
Ed's fall reverses the lever.
And rips it out of the ground and onto Ed.
As the dust from that collision settles, we reveal that Edd n Eddy replace that lever with a motor.
Eddy calls Edd a whiz, and Ed is forced up the tree.
The Eds are all working together and Ed's having a good time now. Eddy is very caring and tells Ed to watch his step, but Ed walks off the side of the platform.
"Warm up the winch, Double Dee." Season 1 Eddy reminds me of Stu Pickles, I just realized. So calm but kind of depressed sounding.
"Put this on, it'll protect your head. From what, I don't know..." I love the delivery on season 1 Eddy's lines.
Ed was wearing a helmet in the last scene, though, so I'm not sure how this is going to change anything.
The Eds are sure working with a lot of power tools today, I'm surprised soccer moms didn't complain about it encouraging their kids to play with daddy's tools or something.
Edd drills through to a board Ed is holding, causing this:
I really love these slapstick gags, season 1 has a lot of great ones.
Ed crashes and is sent up the pulley again.
"Ed, why's your helmet tied to your butt?"
"For protection!"
"*starts pulling it off* It's meant for your head!"
"It's my butt!"
"IT'S NOT SAFE!"
I love this bit.
The snap from the crowbar throws them both to the ground this time.
Edd is watching them go up like he's their mom.
HAHAHA, I just noticed that Ed is now used to the ride and is grinning happily to go up, but Eddy is now scared of going up and is the one pulling up a chunk of the ground. They really should've held on this shot longer, you can hardly see this with all the fading that happens.
Next Ed hammers a board Edd n Eddy are on and you expect them to go flying over the edge.
BUT INSTEAD.
This is a masterful use of slapstick and my favorite type of joke: the mislead.
Ed waves happily up to them and goes "yoohoo!" He's ENJOYING this pattern.
Ed is sent up one last time, and we see the Eds are painting the nearly finished house.
"Painting's fun!"
"Yes, very liberating."
"How are you doing, Ed?"
Oh boy, how's Ed gonna mess this up?
"LIBERATED!"
HAHAaaawww, I love season 1's humor.
Edd designed a pretty sweet clubhouse! Chimney, satellite dish, observatory...
How'd this turn out?
...Did the Eds add that wireless telephone pole back there? Where's that been this whole episode?
Anyway, time to get some members!
Tiny-hands Kevin is throwing around the ol' pigskin with someone elsewhere in the field!
Rolf receives, Jonny and Plank watch, Sarah and Jimmy play tea party, and Nazz hula hoops.
They all see the Eds. The cool kids laugh, the weird boys are confused, and Sarah (my favorite reaction) is embarrassed by her brother.
I LOVE EDDY'S HAWAIIAN SHIRT. I'm so glad it appears in other episodes.
Where are Eddy's orange sunglasses, though? ):
Eddy put a picture of his season 1 model sheet on the flyer, hehehe.
Okay, I love this animation of Eddy ranting about the club, so I'm just gonna break down the frames. Not all of them, but the ones I REALLY like.
Reminds me of the hippo lady from Rocko's Modern Life..
Eddy hands out flyers!
Kevin reads the flyers and asks about the stock car races. I used to think that was slang for go-carts but I'm just finding out that NASCAR is a stock car race. Alright, Eddy, that's a bit ridiculous, I'm siding with Kevin here.
Eddy doesn't think so and does double pistols.
I used to think Kevin then calls them "yog races" but now I think he was changing the subject to "yacht races." He asks the logical question Edd should've asked: just where are you going to hold these and how are you going to pay for it all?
Kevin becomes very curvy. He's got a baby pout, baby hands, and his eyes are very squinty in season 1.
Eddy's head is moving all over the place and making all sorts of interesting faces.
Eddy gets dollar signs in his eyes as he talks about how membership fees will cover everything.
Edd tries to talk sense into Eddy but gets distracted by the cartoony expression.
Plank comes over to remind Eddy that the proceeds from scams are always spent on jawbreakers.
Eddy grabs Jonny and swirls him around. Jonny moans like he's starving to death, he seems so weak and sad in this episode.
"At Club Ed, you can trust these faces!"
I have a shirt that with that line on it. I wish it also had these faces.
What are those little lines sticking off of Ed's lenses? I thought they were animation errors before, but they look intentional here.
Kevin bets the Eds don't have a clubhouse and Eddy gets all up in his grill, just like Daffy Duck.
Eddy points them there and there's a weird glitch that makes it look like he nods his head for no reason.
WHY ARE THEY RUNNING OVER HIM!? HOW TALL ARE THEY HE WASN'T EVEN LOW TO THE GROUND!? WHY IS HIS EYE PURPLE?
This is the kind of slapstick I hate. He's getting hurt but there's no reason for it, besides the drawing being a little funny. There's no setup or timing.
Kevin leads a pack of silhouettes to where Eddy pointed.
I really love silhouette shots, I'm not sure what it is about them.
The Eds proudly introduce their treehouse.
THESE PRE-LAUGH FACES, OH MY GOD
Anyway, the kids laugh and Rolf has white teeth. Has he even had green teeth yet in the series? I feel like every time he shows up I make fun of how they're animating him with normal teeth...
The animation on the Eds' reaction is great.
They realize something is up. Eddy's arm twitches.
Look at Eddy's quivery lip!
Really nice sense of motion in this smear, yum yum yum
AND THEN THESE SCREAMS VIBRATE SO FAST, IT'S FANTASTIC!
Look at this, my DVD can't even get a clean shot they're screaming so fast!
why are the kids laughing? why are the eds screaming?
RANDOM KANKER ENDING, THAT'S WHY.
The kids kind just stop being around for the rest of the scene. The plot as a whole changes for the rest of the episode to fit the Kankers' needs. Eddy tells the Kankers to come down and the Kankers drop things on him.
So Edd n Eddy respond to the challenge with this:
Apparently this why that pole showed up before! And the Kankers turned into a clothes line. Are they... washing clothes in the Eds' treehouse? Why?
Kankers intercept.
They run but it's no use.
New plan, water balloons!
Ed sends up that last big balloon. It flies straight up.
The Kankers seem to be pretending these balloons are presents from the Eds, and all the balloons have landed safely on the clubhouse's porch. The Kankers act like they are going to return the gifts to show their love. Jerks.
Ed n Eddy get hit, but Edd is a dodging master.
He simply takes a big nonchalant step out of the way and a barrage of balloons miss him.
Really nice water effects.
Cute, wet hair Eddy!
A headcanon I got from this scene: Edd's strategy taught me how to win at dodgeball, which leads me to believe Edd is good at dodgeball himself. The dodgeball incident the fans should be familiar with may not be something about his own injury then, because clearly he knew how to avoid the other team's attack.
Edd thinks this is the last balloon and they're safe. He forgot this balloon.
I like the way that the light skin around Eddy's eyes is still there through the balloon.
It explodes and Eddy is left in this awesome pose:
Eddy is mad and SCARY
Eddy kicks the fence around the tree and hurts his foot. He hops on one foot like Doug Funnie and tells Ed to throw him up.
Ed seems to think Eddy's grabbing his foot as an indication of where Ed should grab. There is a horrifying burning noise as Ed does so and Eddy screams.
Eddy hits clothesline.
Eddy falls with panties on his head. Ed apologizes, which I think is nice, and tries again.
This time the plan works, but Eddy didn't really think about how much it would hurt to smash through a wooden floor.
I wonder how much of this was the Kankers' redecorating.. Spool table, fish on the wall, lawn chair... Did the Eds have anything set up in there before the Kankers took over?
A fight breaks out! The whole house and tree animate, it's really neat.
I'd like to point out that the Kankers put an antenna on the clubhouse. Did they find out that Edd wanted a satellite dish on it?
Eddy is shot through the roof.
This ending is very hard on Eddy, I don't understand what he needs to be punished for any more than Ed n Edd, while the Kankers don't need punishment.
Here's a very interesting location.
We see bramble bushes in season 4's finale Take This Ed and Shove It and season 5's The Good The Bad and The Ed. The design in those episodes make the thorn branches a lighter color (pinkish gray), and the former places them in a clearing in the woods behind the cul-de-sac, which is conceivably the same placement as this episode. The latter places them IN some woods, so it's hard to say where those were, perhaps these bramble bushes are all in the same area.
Also, they appear briefly amongst random clips of backgrounds in season 5's Every Which Way But Ed, in a reference to what seems to be this scene I'm analyzing now. Here you go:
You can also see the background I was talking about earlier with the pizza box, and a hidden baby Jonny! That thorn background doesn't appear in any episode, though, maybe that's from a deleted scene...
Okay, seems like the branches are a light color here too, that's good!
Ed slaps life back into purple-eyed Eddy for longer than he needs to.
Edd plucks a thorn and it stretches Eddy's lighter eyelid skin color! I like that.
Eddy wants to build a catapult for his next scam because flying through the air was cool.
Edd tells him to hold still. Ed laughs, the end!
So yeah, this one is a lose for the Eds, plain and simple. But at least Eddy seems to be over it already at the end!
