The cafe masters from Dead Man Espresso / Common Galaxia have done it again. This time it’s something a little different. Sun Moth is an all day eatery offering a range of modern dishes, a great wine list and of course, a beautiful fit out with awesome vibes. As part of the #ZomatoMeetUp (formerly Urbanspoon) the team invited a few bloggers to check this place out and sample the menu.
The place has a similar Scandinavian style that we have seen at Dead Man and Common Galaxia with the polished timber against industrial metal but I would consider Sun Moth a little more elite. I mean, there’s a projector on the wall and the furnishings are custom made including chairs, light fittings and probably the tables too. Simplicity is the sense of style, and they have executed that perfectly throughout.
Their wine list has a great selection, with a focus on a local and natural style. Very on-trend at the moment. Domaine Lucci Noir de Florette 2014 from McLaren Vale, SA. Funky and out of the ordinary, a little cloudy in colour as it is unfiltered. Beautiful elegant fruit notes with a robust structure.
The light-hearted menu has a focus on being simple yet tasty. That they have conquered. For a starter they served us crunchy fried bread with green olives, lemon, chilli, garlic and pecorino, something so simple yet creative that would go perfectly with cold glass of beer.
A delicious board with duck liver parfait, pears, candied walnuts and salted figs. Each element was beautiful on it’s own, apart from the salted figs that we got told not to eat on it’s own as they were very salty, but with the parfait works beautifully.
When I read chicken and sweet corn soup I was thinking of the Chinese style my dad made for me when I was growing up but to my surprise this one had a few more Japanese flavours. Completely different from what I expected actually, this dish had a flavoursome broth with light buttermilk dumplings. Actually perhaps my favourite dish of the evening.
The mushroom and barley risotto had a lot of beautiful textures that broke away from the stodgy-ness of everyday risotto. The flavour was rich and beautiful with the mushrooms being the hero.
A great menu, relaxed vibe and beautiful fit out.
