Hello! Our name is Astrubiehl [he/they], but you can call us Strudel. We liken ourselves to a school of fish, or a voltron-esque mech pilot.

Our favorite interests include: Ultrakill, Mass Effect, Outer Wilds, Artsy Anime, Fish, Bugs, Fiber Arts, Watercolor/Gouache, TTRPGs, and Digital Art. We adore telling stories, and do so through a variety of mediums.

I wanna know about your Shepard I don't care that they romance someone different than mine. Or have a different background or whatever. I find them all so interesting and I like hearing people yap about their Shepard.

Eleanore Rita Shepard (named for her absentee mother's love of The Beatles) left her third foster home at the age of 16 to rough it on the streets of a mid sized Ohio city. There, she joined the human supremacist gang The 9th Street Reds, looking to make enough cash to stay from hotel room to hotel room.

At age 22 after a string of sex work, drug peddling, and one assisted murder, Elly attempts to mug one David Anderson behind a coffee shop.

It does not go well for her, and leaves her with a signature scar right below her left cheek. He tells her she's too young for pedantic crime and that she ought to sort her life out. She responds she has nowhere to go. He tells her to enlist, or join a colony venture. To get the hell off of Earth. Make something of herself.

And so she enlists. And is constantly reminded of Anderson vouching for her.

"You're only here cuz Andersons name is on your paperwork"

"Oh, you're the punk shipped out because Anderson cleaned your clock?"

"Daddy's not here to give you a second chance, cupcake."

And she hates it. Elly quietly goes through her first 3 years of service as a grunt, keeping her head down, hoping to just get by long enough to finish her tour and settle somewhere nice with a little pocket change.

She finds her biotics are useful in cqc, that she excels in hand to hand, and that she doesn't have nearly steady enough aim to be anything more than a short-distance combatant.

They stick her on Elysium. Somewhere quiet. Just like she wants. Elly is happy there, content to twiddle her thumbs and get yelled at by the local drunks.

Then the Blitz happens. And Elly gets mad. And she survives. Not because shes a hero, but because she refuses to lay down and die. She survives. She pushes on. She keeps fighting.

When its over, she hopes to retire. But they make an example out of her. Turn her into a hero. Prevent her from retiring early. And now, she has to put on a mask because she isnt a nameless grunt anymore. Her word carries some weight. She has to make Anderson proud, or at least avoid disappointing him and smearing his name.

Elly stops talking about her childhood and past. She bites her tongue in every interview. Pretends to be the perfect soldier. And is pressured into taking on special training, ending with her acing the N7 test.

She's tired, angry, and just wants a break. But the universe has decided shes its favorite, and thats a terrible thing to be.

I know everyone and their mothers (including me) like to characterize Shepard with having medical trauma but one aspect people never seem to consider is having trauma with the prothean beacons vision.

Imagine having an entire civilizations history seared into your brain forever, never being able to fully comprehend its contents and never being able to forget it. Every time you close your eyes or think about it for even a second, vivid memories of a time before you flash through your mind with all the pain and suffering it entails. Shepard will grow old and the only memories they will vividly recall is the vision, a warning that will play out until they are dead.

This is actually why I gave my shep PNES post war. Once Elly is removed from the constant pressures of being Commander Shepard, the weight of whats happened to her settles into her bones like any trauma survivor. The constant flashbacks and visions and trip ups where she speaks Prothean by accident over the many years being stuffed back manifest as violent, non-epileptic seizures. And she's removed from duty. Completely. Medically retired and declared disabled.

Unpopular opinion developed during my time in the education program at my college:

I dont think SAE (standardized american english) should be the standard for academia. Dialect erasure is real and while I understand the concept of standardizing on a dialect to prevent confusion, I also kinda think thats rooted in bullshit and racism. Like why are AAVE and Appalachian dialects considered 'lesser when they're still regular ass English? Idk maybe I'm opening a can of worms i shouldn't have but like. Let people write their papers in their own voices please.
