Happy 85th birthday to composer Terry Riley! He’s pictured here with Kronos Quartet’s David Harrington. On their latest release, the 2019 Grammy-winning album Sun Rings, Riley incorporates "space sounds" (plasma waves) collected by NASA and a choir that represents, in his words, "the voice of humanity in its struggle to understand the meaning of our place in this unfathomable universe."

Kronos Quartet performs "Beebopterismo," from Terry Riley's 'Sun Rings,' due August 30 on Nonesuch Records.
Sun Rings was commissioned in part by the NASA Art Program and includes plasma waves recorded from NASA spacecraft, including the Voyager 1 and 2 probes. The video, edited by Robert Edridge-Waks, features footage from Willie Williams' visual design for the staged multimedia production of the piece, which has been performed by Kronos nearly fifty times in eleven countries and eighteen states.

Composer Terry Riley and Kronos Quartet's groundbreaking 2002 collaboration Sun Rings made Los Angeles Times music critic Mark Swed's How to Listen series of "indispensable classical music for newbies and aficionados alike." In the article, Swed says the artists "turned the sun’s radiance into the most moving music," writing: "No ensemble in history has changed how we might listen to music as has Kronos. And no string quartet since Haydn’s Opus 20 set has been as radiantly Sun-soaked as Riley’s Sun Rings." You can read it here, and hear the Grammy-winning album here.
Kronos Quartet has shared this new video for "One Earth, One People, One Love," from composer Terry Riley's Sun Rings. Directed by Willie Williams, the new video was made by Treatment Studios for the Sun Rings multimedia live show, which Kronos has performed nearly fifty times in eleven countries and does again this concert season.
