The skin on his back still crawled; his hair stood on end. He had the breath of a messenger torn by a gunshot, remained conscious on sheer will.
If he closed his eyes it’d return behind them. The cold that chattered his teeth, his eye drooping down his chest. Something out the window rustled the shadows; he blinked to find his mother, her eyes mirroring his, her skin so pale the veins gave welcome, an abstract shape without face he knew to be his father walking past to nothing, nothing. A foul sludge shoved down his throat till his lungs burned. He was alone and someone was shaking him and then- he’d been screaming.
The tears ran hot down his face. He smothered them against her; called out her name. He kissed her cheek with her arms cradling him. Her words fell unintelligible but the sound washed over him, cleansed him. Narancia couldn’t remember sinking into sleep anew. There was no end no beginning, and he would know it all again and again.
