On your tiptoes, careful enough not to topple yourself and all the other boxes of cereal over, you stretch your hand as far as you can to grab the last box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch at the top. When, suddenly, another hand grabs it before you.
“Sorry, I really wanted this,” the man tells you. Before you could answer, you were taken aback when you finally recognized who he is. Your ex-boyfriend. “And I know you want this too… but, finders keepers.” He laughs.
“For the record, I found it first.” You slap him lightly on the arm. You two ended on good terms. It was during your college years, anyway. Both of you came to the agreement that your relationship would be nothing serious, knowing that you still had your lives ahead of you. Since the both of you were in the same friendship circle–you agreed to remain friends. Proving that, yes, perhaps exes can be friends after all.
“Okay. Okay,” he raises his arms–the other carrying the cereal. “You got me. It’s yours,” he tells you as he lowers the box to hand it to you. Which, you quickly grab.
“Good,” you place the box of cereal inside your cart.
“So…” He eyes the items in your cart. “Got a boyfriend already?”
You look at him questionably. “Fiancé, actually.” You show him the ring on your finger. Placed there by Sungwoon just a few months ago.
“Oh…” He says with his mouth wide open. “Wow! Wow, congratulations!” He smiles his big toothy smile. “I’m so happy for you!”
“Thank you,” you smile at him. “Oh, and I should really get going. I think I’ve lost him,” you turn to look around–wanting to get out of this awkward situation.
“Yeah, yeah. Sure. Just give me a call some time. We should all hang out soon, you know?” He awkwardly laughs. “Since, I clearly am not updated about any of you guys anymore.” Quickly taking a look at your ring once again.
“Okay. Will do. Bye,” you give him a small wave before turning your cart around–seeing Sungwoon standing at the end of the aisle. Obviously not amused. “Oh, come on,” you mouth at him.
As expected, the entire car ride home was quiet. And only after the door closes at your shared apartment was when Sungwoon made the slightest bit of sound. He huffs out of frustration and directly heads towards the sofa, plopping himself down.
Ignoring the bags of groceries you still have to unpack, you quickly follow Sungwoon through the living room. “Sungwoon, please.” Crossing your arms. “Let’s talk about this. Don’t just give me the silent treatment. This is unfair.”
He scoffs, “Unfair? For you? This is all unfair for me. You know you’re the only person I’ve ever loved this much my entire life.” His eyes were directly planted on the wall at the back of you.
“Jesus. Don’t act like you’ve never had a girlfriend before me!” You try not to yell at him, but you raise your voice just enough to prove a point. “We’ve both been in relationships before, Sungwoon.”
“But none of them I’ve stayed friends with, no?” He snickers to mock you–exaggerating the word friends.
You finally take the seat beside him. “Sungwoon, please. We really are just friends. Why can’t you trust me?” Your voice falters with the last sentence–afraid that there really wasn’t enough trust built on your relationship.
“I trust you. But I don’t trust him,” he says.
“Well, then, you have to trust me that nothing will ever happen between me and him.” Your eyes were practically begging, but how would he know if he doesn’t even bother to turn to look at you.
“Really? After I’ve heard you tell him that you’ll call him?” He snickers at you again. His obvious lack of trust in you is making you feel a mix of emotions. Angry, frustrated, sad–most of all, afraid. You were in fact getting married next year. But what if he doesn’t want to anymore?
“What? No, I never said that…” You gulp, regretting your words immediately as Sungwoon’s eyes finally meet yours. “Okay. Not technically. I mean. Fine, I did. I did tell him that. But only out of courtesy! We did have the same group of friends back then! I told you about this the first week we ever started dating! I told you about all of the past relationships I’ve had! Why can’t you just trust me? Why don’t you trust me? It’s only you, I love. Only you, Sungwoon. Only you. I don’t want to lose you! Please…” Your tears were slowly falling one by one. Words were getting harder to say inbetween each lump that forms in your throat.
He forms an uneven smile and throws his head down–looking at his own hands fiddling with each other. “I’m insecure, okay? I’m afraid. I’m afraid that…that I’m easily replaceable. That there is someone better for you than me. That someday you might realize that, it isn’t me you love after all. That–this,” he gestures with both of his hands. “All of this, all of me, might tire you. And–“ he stammers. “And that you’ll finally decide to leave me.”
“I’m sorry,” you grab ahold of his hands with yours. “I’m so sorry. I know it’s my fault. I’m sorry I ever let you feel that way.” Gaining the strength to do so, you cup the side of his cheek with your hand–carefully turning his face to meet yours. “But I’m here. And I’ll always be here. To promise you, to tell you, to reassure you that I’ll love you no matter what. And that we’ll go through everything together…the moment I agreed to be your wife. So please, please, please, trust me. Because I trust you, and only you, Ha Sungwoon, with my entire life.”
He lets out a heavy sigh. “I guess I’m at fault too, huh? For not letting you feel that I trust you?” He tries to show you a smile. “I’m sorry I let my insecurities get in the way of our trust–mine and yours.” A tear falls down from his soft cheek, glistening in the dim light of the room. You were quick to wipe it away with your thumb.
“Hey,” you shush him. “It’s alright. I love you, okay? And trust me, I will be here to reassure you. Always. God, I’d do anything to kick the butt of your insecurities. But we all have those don’t we? And they never really go away. So right now, I promise to love you in spite of that. And I’ll be here with you, through everything. We’ll get through this. We’ll get through everything together, okay? Baby steps, remember?” You were now cupping his entire face within your hands–wanting nothing but for him to meet his eyes with yours. A sign of promise, of trust, of reassurance.
He looks at you with his eyes glimmering with tears that sparkle under the yellow lights of the room. A sad but breathtaking sight. “I’m sorry,” was all he says as he places his hands on top of yours.
“I’m sorry, too,” you almost say in a whisper. “I love you.” You smile at him.
“I love you too,” he smiles and lets out a small laugh to let you know he’s okay. “I can’t promise anything but, I’ll try to not get jealous as possible. Don’t want to seem possessive or anything. You are free to become friends with whoever you want, I know that. That’s why I’m sorry for acting like a douchebag earlier trying to be cold in front of you. But just know that if any of them tries to hit on you even the slightest bit, then…I won’t hesitate to smack them on the face. And then most probably, cry in front of you a few minutes later,” he laughs.
You laugh with him and move your hands to place it on top of his, grazing your thumb across his soft skin. “How about you help me with our groceries?”
“Sounds domestic,” he says. “I like it.”
