What We Need
by David Budbill
The Emperor,
his bullies
and henchmen,
terrorize the world
every day
which is why
every day
we need
a little poem
of kindness,
a small song
of peace,
a brief moment
of joy.
[Photo of David Budbill with his shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, by Jeb Wallace-Brodeur. Budbill was an activist, poet, musician, and playwright who died last September. This poem arrived via the February 2017 issue of The Sun which featured a tribute to Budbill. Though the poem was originally published in 2005, it feels plenty poignant today.]
