Sorry this took so long but I was having fun with it. Also what a great prompt and so up my alley- “I don’t remember the last time I truly enjoyed Christmas”

He wasn’t fond of holidays. Before Hershel he had never celebrated. Then he had a good few years with Hershel and little Kat, which were okay but… well he never really got along with them. It was nice, he supposed, and Hershel, bless him, tried his best, but they weren’t much of family. Flora would visit, but it didn’t make things better.

And then after, when it was just him and Flora trying to raise Kat. They tried to keep the magic alive but Katrielle was too smart for her own good. She knew there was no Santa, and there was nothing they could do to cheer her up. She missed her father too much. He didn’t blame her.

And then their first Christmas after Hershel and Luke had returned was just awkward, forced, unnatural. They were hardly a family. It had been too long, they couldn’t pretend nothing had happened.

And that lead to today. Their second Christmas since Dad’s return, and Al thought it would be a good idea to bring Lucy. He looked at himself in the mirror, straightening the collar on his button up. She sat on the bed behind him, pulling on her shoes. They hadn’t really talked about what to expect, she just knew they were to spend the night at Hershel’s. He didn’t want to share more, wasn’t sure what to even say. But now as he grimaced, unsure of his appearance she had asked him a question.

“Are you excited to see your family?” It should have been an easy question, really. And yet-

“I don't remember the last time I truly enjoyed Christmas- if I ever did.” Blunt. The wrong thing to say, clearly. Lucy’s face dropped.

“I mean-“ he spoke again so she wouldn’t, but then he wasn’t sure what to say. “Sorry, I just mean… it’s never been easy.” He looked into her sad downcast eyes. She pat the edge of the bed.

“Come here.” He did as he was told, sitting next to her. “I know you haven’t always had the best life, but you love your family, yeah?” He nodded. “Then I promise you we can have a good Christmas. It won’t be perfect— it never is!” She laughed to herself and he felt himself smiling a little at her. “But that’s okay, it isn’t supposed to be. Don’t stress too much.” She rubbed his back gently and he relaxed a bit into her. “Promise me you’ll go in with a positive mindset and I can guarantee we’ll at least have a little fun.” She pinched her fingers almost closed to show ‘a little’. “I will make you laugh mister.” Well that alone made him laugh. He looked up at the mirror, where he could see the two of them, side by side, knee to knee on the bed. He smiled again before getting up and turning to face her.

“Okay, sure but-“ he paused, “how do I look?” She laughed before hopping up and fixing his hair.

“You look lovely, let’s go.”

lockon: 罠 (ending 1) and 閉ざされた世界 (movie opening), both by the back horn (these ones might just be because the vocalist for this band sounds similar to lockon’s jp voice but the association is so strong that i feel like there’s something else going on there)
