This is what Eartha Kitt said when asked about the Vietnam War by LadyBird Johnson.
I posted the full post earlier, but this stuck out as something I wanted to point out.
What she says about Sunset Blvd., most young people have no idea about.
What was happening was that the young people of LA made Sunset Blvd. their place to “hang” and listen to bands, and the pigs were clamping down hard and the tensions were high. Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” was written about the phenomenon.
The whole idea of the pigs on Sunset Blvd totally fucking up the young peoples’ idea of unity and freedom became famous. Joni Mitchell’s song California (from her masterpiece from ‘71 “Blue”) even references the phenom.
She’s singing about coming home to California from being in Europe and the famous line:
“I wanna see the folks I dig...I’ll even kiss a Sunset pig! California, I’m comin’ home!”
HISTORY and MUSIC, BABIES! HISTORY AND MUSIC!!!!!!
