Whenever I think I’m over jatp (ha.), a rogue soundtrack song will come on shuffle and immediately, the scene will replay in my head and i lose control of all bodily functions and proceed to immerse myself in those 3 minutes while singing along dramatically (or pretend to dance if it’s all eyes on me) (or pretend ive got a glittery cape on if it’s the other side of Hollywood) (or pretending I’m both julie and luke during edge of great while adding the phantom guitar solo) and cry about how we deserved a season two and the potential, but then i’ll also feel eternally grateful for what we got and how this little show brought together so many wonderful people and inspired so many others in various ways and yeah the pandemic took many things away from us but we got this show and i swear, i’m truly never going to be “over” jatp.

it’s the one year anniversary of JATP and i honestly don’t even know how to thank the show that relit the spark in my life that i didn’t even know i had lost.

it’s so easy to joke that this is a kid’s show, but this show is so much more than that. it’s the journey of a girl and her family, leaning on each other through their grief and eventually finding a way to use that pain to continue living. it’s the story about three boys, who lost their lives at 17 and how they were brought back to see their dreams play out.

but it’s also about the family that you get to choose. the people who aren’t blood that will protect you and be there for you. the people who are blood who will literally move houses or send you to school in australia so that they can keep that light shining in you. it’s about the stranger you collide into on the street who helps you figure out life and get answers. it’s people ghosts who drop into your life and stay, when you didn’t know you needed it. it’s music making an invisible connection with strangers who become friends who become family. and that’s what i love about this show.

all the stories told in these 9 episodes resonated with me so deeply one year ago, and they still do now. i’m incredibly grateful that it reminded me that i’m allowed to live again, in whatever way i’m able to.

i’m thankful for how it re-inspired me to be creative, after many many years of not using that side of my brain. but mostly, i’m thankful that it reintroduced me to fandom, a thing i didn’t know i could still be a part of. where i can enjoy quietly from the sidelines and also meet incredibly kind people i’m now lucky enough to call friends. so thank you, to this wonderful fandom and the amazing people i follow for being the most talented and entertaining bunch of human beings 🧡
