“Not like that dummy,” you corrected Argyle, taking the pizza dough from his hands and showing him the correct way to knead it.
Argyle should have been watching your demonstration. Instead, he was focused on your face. Watching the way it scrunched up in concentration. He liked the wrinkle in your brow the most. He thought about kissing it. Would that get you to smile? As hot as he thought your usual grumpy demeanor was he couldn't help but wonder what your smile would look like.
“Are you paying attention?” You scowled at him and his heart danced at the sight.
“Y-yeah. ‘Course I am,” he nodded enthusiastically.
With a sigh you placed the dough onto a tray with others, wrapped it in saran wrap and handed it to him with a slight shove. He stumbled back slightly and grinned at you as he grabbed a hold of the tray.
“Put those in the fridge to proof then take over the front from Ryan. Tell him he’s on kitchen duty,” you instructed.
With one hand still on the tray Argyle saluted, “yes ma’am,” he replied on his way to the walk-in-fridge.
“Don’t call me ma’am!” You called out after him.
Once the tray was safely in the fridge he went to the front counter at the registers, freeing his long hair from the bun and hair net he had set it in and greeting the customers with his ever shining smile. The first person to approach the counter was an older man in a business suit, his gaze immediately judgmental as his eyes laid on Argyle.
“Welcome to Surfer Boy pizza! What can I get ya brochacho?” Argyle asked.
“Uh yeah,” the man began. “I’ll just get a salad.”
“Oh sorry man no-can-do. We only do pizzas! I could get you a veggie pizza though?” He offered.
The man sighed in annoyance. “Of course you have salads. I just ordered one from you guys yesterday!”
Argyle paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. As far as he knew Surfer Boy had never had salads.
“Sorry man it’s not on our menu would you—“
“What are you stupid?!” The guy snapped.
From the kitchen you could hear the commotion. You peaked out to see a man yelling at Argyle.
Argyle who never seemed to mind when you were feeling a little cross. Argyle who would share the last of his best weed with you. Argyle who always told you the dumbest jokes to make you laugh. Sweet, friendly, wonderful Argyle. Bursting from out of the kitchen you stomped over to them, crossing your arms over your chest as you stared the guy down.
“Out.” You ordered simply.
“Excuse me?” The man scoffed looking at you as if you were a piece of gum on his shoe.
“Out.”
“No, I’m going to get what I ordered!” He demanded, slapping his hand on the counter.
You leaned over the counter into the guy's face giving him a deadly stare. “I said out.”
He thought about it for only a second before he turned on his heel and left.
You turned to Argyle who was grinning wildly at you.
“What?” You asked, and he noticed the sudden change in tone of voice as you spoke much softer to him. Maybe still a little mean by some peoples standards. But he knew this was you being nice to him.
“You like me,” he beamed, barely able to contain his excitement.
You rolled your eyes, ”Just get back to work,” You said gesturing to the people still waiting in line to order.
Argyle raised a finger to them as if to tell them to wait. “Sure,” he nodded. “Once you admit you like me.”
You pursed your lips, narrowing your eyes at him for a moment, scanning over his features to determine if he was being sincere or messing with you. But Argyle, even in his goofiness, was rarely insincere. “Fine, I like you. Now will you please just take the other orders?”
“Wanna go out?” He asked suddenly.
“What?”
“Do you want to go on a date with me? This weekend?”
You paused, taken aback by his forwardness. Argyle, mistaking your silence as a no deflated for a moment, “Right, sorry. I’ll get back to work.”
“Yes,” you replied quickly. “Yes I’ll go out with you. Saturday, regal theater at 8. Don’t be late,” you rushed back into the kitchen hoping he couldn’t see the smile slowly creeping up your face.
“I’ll be there!” He called out after you, his grin even wider than before.
“Did you see that?” Argyle whispered to the other person at the register with him. “My girlfriend is so hot.”
“She's not your girlfriend,” they laughed lightheartedly.
“Not yet she isn‘t.”
