The apartment smelled like the orange you’d peeled twenty minutes ago, the sharp, clean oils still hanging in the warm air alongside the mellow steam of two mugs of tea.
A heavy block of afternoon sunlight cut across the bed, split perfectly in half by the drape of the curtain. Matt was lying right where the light hit, completely unraveled from the chaos of Hell’s Kitchen. He wasn’t wearing his glasses, his eyes closed as he leaned his head back against the pillows, soaking in the rare quiet.
Between you sat the cat, a heavy, purring weight sprawled lazily over the blankets. Matt’s long fingers were buried in its soft fur, idly tracking the steady, rhythmic vibration of its chest. He could feel the exact line where the shadow ended and the direct heat of the sun began, warming his skin and casting a soft glow over the room.
"You're thinking too loud," Matt murmured, his voice thick with a lazy, resting warmth.
He didn't open his eyes, but his hand shifted away from the cat, his knuckles brushing against the mattress until they found your knee. He hooked his fingers gently around your wrist, tugging you just an inch closer into the sunbeam.
"Come here," he whispered, a small, genuine smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "The cat shouldn't be the only one getting spoiled today."
