A piece that’s been floating around in my head for a while now, that finally solidified when I needed it for myself in between my other projects. The text is a quote from Hannibal (the book); it’s a thought that comes to Clarice Starling while acknowledging corruption, and when I first read this line, it took my breath away and I had to put the book down for a moment. I think I read it exactly when I needed it, and it’s kept me afloat in the midst of all the unthinkable craziness this year (to put that all extremely politely): I may not be able to control the massive things and systems at play outside of myself. I can only do what I can do…but there’s also power in that.
I can make sure that within my reach, people will always feel safe. That they’ll know compassion and have someone else looking out for them. That they won’t be alone, and they’ll have someone to help lift them (and their voice) up. We need each other now more than ever- we’re all we have. And so I’ll continue to do what I can, within my reach. I’ll continue to be kind and keep fighting for a better world, until my last breath. ✊🏼🖤 I guess it’s fitting that Clinton pointed out that the spikes on this one look like a compass, since this sentiment is what’s been guiding me lately.
I really love how textured this piece came out, it was so much fun to put together! (I’ll never say no to paint splatter and rusty metal…those things are my happy place 😝) I love interactive elements in art, so I was excited to add a magnet for the moth! It makes it easier to move the entire piece more safely, but you can also put the moth on any way you want- straight or sideways, like it’s about to fly away. Or upside down! Whatever makes your heart happy 🥹 This will be up in my shop on Friday, the 7th!! ✨
