My only regret is that I completely forgot to draw ripped jeans and a hoodie on the helicopter somehow. The one thing I was told not to forget.
This all started as a joke, I was bugging a friend who actually doesn’t have a “sona” or anything of the sort, and he knows that it isn’t the kind of thing I draw anyway, but nonetheless the joke was to come up with something absolutely absurd and actually put a modicum of effort into it. So here we have a helicopter dogkin.... which I REALLY hope becomes a common thing because this project was so much fun to do.
Like before I started with a picture reference to trace something I’d never drawn before. The picture I took wasn’t good enough so I ended up using public domain photo of an AH1 Super Cobra and just ran with it.
I got the initial tracings done, and I was going to just draw a humanoid face on the helicopter, but I couldn’t quite get the angles right. I added a line to connect the nose and mouth that dogs/cats have in cartoons with the w-shaped mouths. Well it went from then to extending the nose, and then extending it a bit further, and before you know it I had this goofy guy drawn.
I went through a few iterations with the face, and eventually decided that neon-highlighted emo hair was the way to go, though it obscured one of the eyes and made the image look more flat, I think it’s more fun this way.
You’ll see in the comparison that another thing I decided on was changing the outlines from blue to black; originally I had intended for it to be a blue helicopter (I had to choose one of the 3 primary colors: neon cyan, neon magenta, or neon green) and instead I managed to work in all the colors on the glowsticks that are “pierced” on the tail.
I don’t know the first thing about helicopters or drawing emo dogs, but I had fun with this.
