It Came to Me in a Dream

Legitimately, I dreamt up a fake SMG4 episode back in January and never got around to drawing the OC that sprung from it, even though this took me about an hour. In short:

A lot changed from conception to concept art, in part due to me wanting to distance Nara from existing characters, but also because she was made in a dream.

Her episode started off as Saiko sustaining a head injury and going back to her old yandere behavior. About halfway through, it became a high school AU with Saiko herself helping Mario ditch the obsessed new girl along with Boopkins and Toad.

She was originally a squidlike thing and was bluish purple. I changed her into a spaghetti creature to tie her back to Mario and because, y’know. Meggy. At one point, she would’ve just been a sea anemone who only looked like spaghetti.

I changed her backstory entirely from what my dream generated. Originally, she was a runaway princess from an undersea kingdom who was looking for a husband. Eventually, I decided to not just make her an uplifted plate of spaghetti, but to canonize all the random, uneaten plates of spaghetti Mario’s been seen with throughout the years as a single character to give some context as to why she’s immediately enamored with the local idiot.

She just is Lola Bunny as she is in The Looney Tunes Show, particularly her more stalkery first season characterization. Bob and Saiko have long since abandoned their old roles as “The Thing Who Wouldn’t Leave”, so she seemed like a worthy replacement.

In terms of character dynamics, she’s obviously madly in love with Mario for caring for her for so long and sharing her fondness of not wearing pants. Mario switches between being obsessed with her (when she’s acting rationally), to finding her annoying (when she acts like him), to fearing her (when she’s being violent), to being oblivious to her (when she’s being passively creepy). Nara, in turn, is constantly trying to get Luigi, SMG4, and Meggy out of the picture so Mario only pays attention to her, although she gets along well with the latter two if Mario isn’t around. She’s largely indifferent to Boopkins, Tari, and Saiko (the latter of whom particularly dislikes her), has surprisingly good rapport with Bob, Shroomy, and Melony, gets violently angry whenever Peach is brought up, and for some reason continuously confuses SMG3 for Mario whenever they meet for the first time in an episode despite Three no longer being his palette swap. And she has a hilariously petty and mutual hatred of Rob over what food is better.

Nara’s relatively weak compared to most of the gang. She can essentially fly to anywhere Mario or someone who looks like him is and wields the same gun she does in the image above with terrifying efficiency. However, she’s not usually motivated to fight, and when she is, she tends to attack everyone indiscriminately.

Essentially, her revised debut episode would be a parody of Saiko’s own: something would happen to give Nara a body after all these years, and Mario would gradually go from loving having spaghetti love him back to being horrified when she refuses to let him eat anything else, ever. Unlike Saiko, who runs off at the end until her next appearance, Nara refuses to leave the Showgrounds even after her defeat and just falls in with the Glitchy Gang because they can’t appease her otherwise.
