After Castiel took on Sam's Hell he became the architect of his own, spending weeks in the Northern Indiana State Hospital trapped inside of himself with only Meg for company. He finds his purpose in Dean, joining him in the mission to defeat Dick Roman and save the world that he nearly destroyed in the first place. After Roman is dead, Sam settles into the domestic life he always believed that he wanted, with Castiel and Dean eventually following suit. But madness doesn't leave overnight, the world isn't fixed and the implications of lies last longer than those of truths and Castiel and Dean realize that, when tested, their bond may not be as strong as they told themselves it was.

The moment Castiel touched the tortured, strange light that was Dean’s human soul, as he fought and he clawed his way out of the pit, as he cried as loud as he could Dean Winchester is saved Castiel realized how wrong he had been in assuming his own value. As he tried to cleanse himself of Dean’s soul he found himself astonished by his own ignorance. In another universe this might’ve made him laugh. But now, in this universe, the one where he was desperately trying to get the feeling of Dean’s soul out from where it had mixed with his grace it was almost enough to make Castiel cry. He didn’t.
