Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls #1) by C.C. Hunter ★★★★
I have always been meaning to read this book since I first saw it. The name sounded cool and the cover looked interesting, so I just had to read it. Also, the cover of the book looked just really cool.
Summary:
Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen… One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world. Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart. Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

I liked how the beginning started off with something interesting instead of slowly getting to a part that is of some slight amusement. I don't know why, but it kind of reminded me of Percy Jackson and House of Night. Well, something along those lines. It was cool with the mystery - of what she is - and action in the book. The added romance with the love triangle made it that much better.
When I was reading about the part where Kylie first meets Derek I thought that he was Lucas until he revealed his name. He just had that mysterious air about him because he didn't speak, was sitting in the back, and seemed like a man of few words when they were on the bus. So I classified that as signs of being a werewolf. Later on, his identity became obvious when Derek and Kylie start talking to each other more.
As the book went on, I started liking Derek more and more and wanting him and Kylie to get together, instead of Lucas and her. I thought that she would get together with Derek soon: Derek is nice and handsome, Lucas and her were avoiding each other like the plague, she is afraid of Lucas since he killed her cat, and Lucas has a possessive she-wolf that has been giving her the evil eyes. Guess she didn't date him right away was because of what her cheating ex and her step-father did, which made very hesitant to trust men. Everything goes fine until someone gets closer to Derek and she notices that Lucas isn't so scary anymore and is in fact a hot guy. Truth be told, I didn't want her feelings to waiver because I liked Derek so much and I didn't want her to have feelings for another guy other than Derek.
It was cool the part when she finally find out that the army ghost dude that has been watching her is actually her biological father. That was a intriguing part, but if I were to pick my favorites I think it would be the part where she is talking to Derek about himself and his life at the rock, and almost kiss before they are interrupted by Lucas, who comes to defend her. I would either be that part or the part where she goes to the river with Lucas and they kiss, and they soon run into her ex, Trey, mistakes Lucas for Derek.
