 Most of Shinra’s military didn’t have a whole lot in the way of armor. Washington was among those who was volunteered to test a new, highly flexible suit of armor, which was to be used for SOLDIER operatives. Unfortunately, the program was headed by Scarlet, and Wash was its only survivor. The project was deemed too dangerous and dropped, although Washington was allowed to keep the armor…mostly because nobody could get it off.

Washington’s unique status got him landed in the Turks, where his armor made him its most durable member. Still, he was ultimately no more of a combatant than the rest of the team, and his armor had to be repaired extensively over time. He remains alive to this day, although most of his efforts are dedicated to aiding in the construction of Edge.

Quick of wit as ever (and never one to let warnings of impending danger go unacknowledged, even from strangers), the commander sidesteps to the right to narrowly avoid the incoming attack-- Only to end up narrowly receiving it instead. Still, the damage done is minimal, and requires but a moment's recovery before she turns to shoot a glance at her companion,

Sometimes, mercenaries just get hired by the wrong person.

There’s a Wash-shaped dent in the wall. Cloud just feels sorry for the guy  in all that armor - it’s not his fault, any more than it was Reno’s. Less, in fact. He’s just trying to protect somebody. It simply happens to be the wrong person. 

"Sorry, but I can’t risk you shooting me in the back. You understand." One longtime warrior to another, they both get it. Normally, Cloud would just leave him unconscious. But he doesn’t have the time to get through the armor with his hands. So he’ll have to pierce it instead. "You’ll come back soon. Be careful with your clients next time."

With that, he leveled Vigilante and drove it through the warrior’s chest. That armor was a fair bit tougher than it looked, and Cloud wasn’t what he used to be, so it took more out of him than he expected. In fact, it wasted several seconds, which was unpleasant - couldn’t have been a very quick death, which made Cloud feel even worse.

But he didn’t have the time for that right now.
