they say horror and scifi and the like reflect the current anxieties of the day and nowhere is that more apparent than the AI Death Machine scare, like, damn, its almost like an elite class is scared shitless that its suppressed workers will wake up one days and realize they can kill everyone who has stolen their worv, minds, words, and productions.
also is there nowhere more apparent than the deepening class split. because that being 'the fears of the day reflected in ficition' is ACTUALLY 'the fears of people who are platformed and listened to is reflected is the fiction that is deemed acceptible to publish'
i suppose the most guiding terror of the american people right now is brown people and trans people. i suppore you can USE ai death machine to express that fear, but thats a level of metaphor i dont see working when that narrative is ALREADY a fiction - the very ideas themselves of the menacing brown person or the fiction of the bathroom sex offender.
the idea too af the ai gaining sentience and turning on its creators also i think would in this interpretation imply the white dominant imagination believes in any way that brown or trans people could in fact gain sentience one day. when in reality all i've ever experienced is a dynamic more akin to them being afraid a leashed dog might fcet rabies and start biting. they don't think of us as having minds to develop at all. the idea that we are human and not instinct-driven beasts isn't even there at all. so you would think that a return to werewolf/vampire/monster stories would be in return among the larger people. if it is so, i couldn't say. i read pretty specific indie genres so my knowledge fails me here. but i am wondering, now.
anyway, overall, though, i think the AI Death Machine was a tired trope the second time it was done, and betrays most often a lack of imagination. give me a world with a sentience choosing (its fellow) humanity, for once.

It's official. Agent Carter is my new favorite show.
"When Aliens Invade"
...spycraft ensues:
“Terri, I have a… confession to make.”
Oh no. Last time someone had had a ‘confession to make’ to me, it had been a friend professing his undying love for me. Of course, he’d changed his mind the next day, but it had been a very traumatizing experience for the both of us.
I shook my head to clear it, and scooped Eckleburg off my desk and deposited him on the floor. Lenny’s face became marginally less troubled, and I suppressed the urge to tease him for it. Instead, I leaned my chin on my hands and looked at him.
“What is it?”
“Well - you asked me how I got into that government file,” he said.
Scheisse. “Len -”
He cut me off. “Before I came here, I worked for the CIA.
