Students reflect on terrorism’s impact on citizenship discourse
Sixteen years after the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, Americans culture and life is still heavily influenced by 9/11. On top of the trauma--experienced individually and collectively-- the fear following the attacks has fueled a lot of reactionary, racist sentiments that the nation still struggles to overcome. Shortly after the horrifying attacks on September 11, 2001, the UWM Post ran an article about the rise in anti-Muslim harassment across the country. Although the way the 9/11 attacks are remembered will continue to change as more time passes, one takeaway will remain from this and other similar atrocities is that, “[terrorism] breeds unpeacefulness in peace-loving people.” As we heal, let’s all work toward a more peaceful society.
