to the point where she was forcing herself to accept marrying Fumio, who she didn't love, because that's what was expected of her
and Fumio knows that he's not the one for her, despite still being in love with her, so he comes up with a plan
he arranges for Setsuko to be overheard by Daichi, so Daichi can interrupt and demand a challenge
all to give Kaede a chance to finally choose for herself, to go against the intended plan so that she can be happy
Fumio does this, knowing that there's nothing in it for him beyond heartbreak
