The explanation of the word "unique" in Chambers' Twentieth Century dictionary is as follows: Single or alone in any quality; without a like or equal. This word, in my opinion, applies to Beatrice Lillie more than any other star in the world, with the possible exception of Charlie Chaplin. She is supremely single and alone and and certainly without like or equal. When she first comes onto the stage she imposes herself immediately and effortlessly on the audience. Her manner is a mixture of assurance and humility. She smiles, not tentatively, but hopefully - and suddenly, in a split second, she is loved, not merely laughed at or respected or admired, but loved.
Noel Coward on his old friend Beatrice Lillie, in a 1964 TIME magazine article.
I think this will be my last Supreme Lady.
