Pete's Mini Zine Fest This Saturday!
Glad to be a part of Pete’s Mini Zine Fest once again! I’m outside this year and looks like it’ll be sunny! I always love this little show because it focuses on just the mini comics & zines, which is why I am a cartoonist in the first place! This year I’ll also have my new AER HEAD prints for sale.
Also this week is surf week! Lots of fun surfing competitions and hangouts going on in Long Beach! I may or may not be able to make some of these events, but if I do, I’ll let you know!
Happy summer!
Surfing Event!
Very excited to announce that I’ll be participating in a surfing event this Sunday June 2nd! No I’m not competing (ha after only one surf lesson!) but I’ll be onsite creating surf themed “flash sketches” and offering AER HEAD prints for donations. If you’re in Long Beach and want to check it out - should be a fun time! It’s run by the NY Eastern Surfing Association and is sponsored by all those companies with the logos on the graphic (look I’m there too! :D ) 10% of donations will go to NY ESA.
This is a prime example of creating your own opportunities as an artist (of any kind). I’m doing freelance social media marketing for others, and am coordinating some events for my clients, which got me thinking I should “level up” my own game in terms of marketing on and off line. So I googled around for any surf events going on and this one appeared. I emailed the organizer just to see if I could participate somehow and here we are! You just never know! It never hurts to ASK. The worst someone could say is “no.”
At this event, I’m hoping to get more people interested in my AER HEAD comic and Patreon. I’m also curious about the event vibe, as there is a scene at the end of AER HEAD #1 at a surf competition. Research! And also fun! One challenge will be to keep all my prints and paper free of sand and water droplets. Yay for Krystal Seal protectors! Also wrapping everything in plastic. Super pumped for this event! Oh and the site for NY ESA says there is another “craft-vendor” fair on the board walk, but I’m NOT part of that - I’ll be under a tent with the ESA team chilling on the beach!
The “flash sketches” will be of similar detail to this “ROCK LOBSTER” doodletune I did recently (so many people loved in on instagram - if you’re not already following me there I’m @mindyindy_art . I’ll be drawing simple sharpie sketches of animals surfing, and you’ll see more examples on all my social media this week.
SURF’S UP!
Press Release: Cloud 9 Ready to Deliver for the Start of the 22nd International Siargao Surfing Cup WSL-ASC sanctioned QS1500
25 September 2016, Siargao Island-Philippines: After the opening ceremony and one lay day yesterday, the forecasted swell has finally arrived this afternoon to the delight of the waiting surfers and surf fans gathered on the island paradise of Siargao Island in the Philippines.
The full contingent of international and local surfers that make up the full 64 man heat draw, as well as the event organizers, have been eagerly eying the swell forecast that shows a typhoon spinning out in the Pacific that is expected to deliver the much anticipated swell that creates the perfect barreling waves that Cloud Nine is famous for the world over.
And this afternoon it has arrived, and is seemed like every surfer on the island paddled out to try and get a wave before the contest starts, from the pros to even beginning surfers.
Contest Director Gerry Degan has send out the call to the surfers to be in the Cloud 9 Tower at 5 amtomorrow morning ready to start Round One of the competition. “It will be mid tide tomorrow at about sunrise, so we want to run as many heats as we can as the tide is going out” said Degan. “If the swell isn’t too big, we’ll be able to run through the low tide and get a full day of competition in. We’re hoping the swell gives us at least two or two and a half days of pumping waves, which is what we need to complete the event, so we’ll run as long as we can each day,” he explained.
There is a total prize purse of $50,000 USD on the line, as well as important WSL Qualifying series and ASC championship points on the line, so competition will be fierce indeed. The locals know this wave so well they can almost surf it blind, so the international pro’s will definitely have their work cut out for them as they chase that prize money and points.
Starting out the first heat of Round 1 tomorrow morning will be last year’s winner, local boy John Mark Tokong, Manuel Selman from Chile, recent Quiksilver Young Guns winner Rio Waida from Indonesia, and local Glenn Figueron.
In Heat 2, current ASC rankings leader Dede Suryana from West Java (Indonesia) will be up against Fraser Dovell from Australia, Joe Keogh from Hong Kong, and local Philmar Alipayo, who recently won the ASC sanctioned West Sumbawa Pro at Supersucks in Indonesia.
It’s sure to be an epic tube fest with some high flying aerials and deep hacks to keep the judges busy and the spectators entertained, so stay tuned for daily video highlights and check for heat score updates and other info at:

Bali’s Mega Semadhi Wins 10th Annual Rip Curl Cup in Classic Padang-Padang Barrels.
Bali-Indonesia: After being pipped at the buzzer by American Chris Ward in the final seconds of last year’s Rip Curl Cup, Bali’s Mega Semadhi finally reaped the rewards of a Rip Curl Cup victory today, locking into a classic late afternoon Padang-Padang barrel with one minute and 40 seconds remaining to leapfrog from third place into the lead and win the 10th annual Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational. Semadhi, a Pecatu (Bukit Peninsula) local, was absolutely ecstatic with his win in his 10th Rip Curl Cup appearance, as he was so close to tasting victory last year just to have it snatched away from him in the final seconds by California’s Chris Ward. “This win means so much to me, here at my home and in front of my family, and because of last year too”, said Semadhi. “In those final minutes I was trying to be patient, thinking that if I could lose in the final minutes like last year, I could also be the one to win in the last minute too. When that last set came in I said not this one, not this one, I gotta pick the right one. And then it was like a fairly tale come true when I heard the score and that I won.”
Semahdi is currently studying to be a Hindu priest, and perhaps part of his studies is about patience as today it certainly paid off for the young man. Just a couple of weeks ago he was runner up in another ASC competition at Balangan Beach, and was bested by fellow Balinese goofyfooter Raditya Rondi, who held the lead in the final today until the final minutes. Putting on a very impressive performance today in his first trip to Bali and his first ever surf at Padang-Padang was runner-up, 16-year old Jacob Willcox from Margaret River in West Australia. Willcox looked very comfortable in the often intimidating lineup, winning his first round heat by taking down locals Garut Widiarta and Marlon Gerber, besting Rizal Tandjung and Dede Suryana in the quarterfinals, and then Laurie Towner and Sean Peggs in the semifinals to get his Finals berth. “This is my first time in Bali and first time to surf Padang-Padang, so I’m super stoked to come in second and happy for Mega, because he really deserved the win,” said Willcox. When asked what he thought of the wave at Padang Padang, he replied, “It’s a great wave, similar to some of our barreling waves back home, so I felt at home out there. It was great to be out there with the Bali boys, they were all ripping, and it was such a close final and they were all chatting with each other and stuff. This is definitely one of my best experiences ever at a contest!” Rip Curl SEA CEO Jeff Anderson was all smiles after the trophy presentation, saying, “We had to get tough some heats during round one, but from there it just got better and better. Mega has been in every contest…every single contest we’ve had at Padang-Padang. I talked to him after he won his semifinal heat and told him ‘Mega, this is your year, you’re going to win it this year,’ I just had the feeling he could do it. He did have a bit of a struggle in the final, but that last wave came and it was magic. The whole crowd was behind him, it was just perfect! I couldn’t be happier!” The Rip Curl Cup has a longstanding tradition of running in only the best waves with the best tuberiders in the world, which at a wave like Padang Padang requires a lot of patience. Today was day 42 of the 45-day waiting period, and though there were lots of nay-sayers at the start of today’s event, by the end of the day Padang Padang proved on again that it could deliver the goods and retain its stature as Bali’s most sought after barrel riding experience.
A quality field of 32 barrel-riding specialist invitees from Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, USA, Hawaii, Brazil and Indonesia arrived at Padang Padang beach this morning at daybreak to vie for the honor and privilege of hoisting the coveted Rip Curl Cup and having their name inscribed on it with the previous event champions. 2013 Rip Curl Cup Championship Final Results 1. Mega Semadhi (IND) 16.45 points 2. Jacob Willcox (AUS) 14.90 points 3. Raditya Rondi (IND) 14.90 points 4. Alik Rudiarta (IND) 11.90 points
