With a band name like Fruit & Flowers, you’d think that this Brooklyn outfit would present us with sweet aromatic pop, but their ravishing music tends to veer towards the darkly bewitching side of the music spectrum. They hook me in with their latest single Out Of Touch. The song’s smoky oblique, honeyed yet barbed indie rock can be described as “surf noir”, infused with garage psych and seasoned with a dash of angular post-punk. Out Of Touch is the first single from Fruit & Flowers’ just announced debut EP, Drug Tax, due out June 30th via Little Dickman Records. The song comes with a washed out, vintage cut music video, shot where else, but on the beach. Fruit & Flowers will be playing a string of tour dates at various venues in Brooklyn through the end of June. Tour details can be found, here.
What does surf noir mean ?
Basically a retro/ beachy sound. I read a comment that summed it up well.. “surf rock rockabilly style.” Especially popularized by The Beach Boys. “It is sometimes referred to interchangeably with the California Sound.[16] During the later stages of the surf music craze, many of its groups started to write songs about cars and girls.” A lot of “wah wah” guitar and keyboards.
