“Are engagement piercings a thing?”
No, absolutely not. Surface Anchors (aka microdermals, aka dermals, aka whatever) are not “on the rise”. Know what is? Terrible tabloid journalism.
(This is what your cute surface anchors will inevitably look like, regardless of how much you think you’re special or unique). In the last week I’ve received maybe 5-6 media inquiries about “Engagement Piercings”, and all of them have been published claiming that there’s a “new trend” in piercing where people are forgoing the idea of traditional wedding jewelry in favor of a piercing on the finger. Not only is this not actually happening, most of these articles are being written by journalists who are simply reaching out to every possible piercer that they can in order to find someone who is willing to say “Sure, that’s a thing! Those things are great! Totally a real trend!” How do I know this? I have the same emails in my inbox as at least five other people from a handful of news networks, I did an interview with Refinery29 on the subject, and I work for someone pretty significantly responsible for some of the early microdermal techniques. Here’s the truth: There’s no new trend, surface anchors are just as temporary as they have always been, people are not flocking into studios to have piercings done on their fingers, and clickbait news outlets are fabricating a “trend” in order to get you to somehow imagine that there is. Some of the articles written use pictures that aren’t even real piercings - the Daily Mail posted one that was from a Worth1000 photoshop competition years ago. Here’s the kicker: It’s going to prompt a lot of piercers with less than ideal ethics and morals to do a whole bunch of these things after using these articles to basically fabricate a demand without actually explaining the true risks or lack of longevity that can be expected with these piercings. @refinery29 was kind enough to publish an article basically implying that I approve of the idea, but if you’d really like to read the full interview I gave, you can find it by clicking on over to Modblog.
added some more surface anchors to my collection today
Me: why do people think that when someone gets a mod, it's because they don't like their body? Mom: well, you're clearly changing it because you don't like it. Me: I like my home the way it is but sometimes a few pictures are nice. Even without the pictures, I still like home. But with the pictures, I like it more.
Some of what I've been up to recently... Surface Piercings with Opals, Surface Anchors, Anti-Tragus, Conch-to-Conch Industrial. These were all with Internally Threaded Titanium jewellery
