Day 6 to Neuvicq
Yet another good cycling day and ready for some rest tomorrow. I am leaving the camping gear behind after this and relying on hostels. Psychologically it feels good to know you are carrying less weight but not sure it makes a lot of difference really.
French Revolution 2019 style - yet another burnt out speed camera at the side of the road.
Went through the town of Surgeres. Not a place I’ve ever been before but looked very interesting with a large fortified area in the middle of the town, unfortunately didn’t manage to get a picture that would do it justice. I’ve made a mental note to return when I get chance.
I had a couple of strokes of luck early on. To avoid main roads I needed to thread through difficult to navigate country lanes. I need not have worried because the French had decided to close both main roads in question for road works and diverting all the traffic, turning both into empty cycle tracks just for me (about 25km in all) with only the slight matter of a few plastic bollards at each end negotiated with a cheery wave and bonjour to the workmen - result.
I know I am getting a bit wearisome with my complaints about the wind gods and I did resolve to remain silent on the subject today but I must say they have been really playing with my mind again. I left just after dawn this morning and set off along very flat windless road. After a couple of hours the flatness gave way to a more featured landscape and there was just a faint (head) breeze, but when I left Cognac the wind really increased. For anybody who knows the area, it is pleasantly undulating, but some of the gradients can go up for about 3kms then down again for the same, normally no problem, but today even going downhill involved low gear. After a while I gave up and stopped for lunch in a picnic area, but even this proved difficult because the wind kept blowing everything away. Then about 40km from Neuvicq my route turned a little to the east and what had been a strong SW wind moved around a bit to the west and I just about took off wind assisted (and about time). So although I did over 160k again today don’t feel too tired at the end, just hoping the wind keeps moving round - a NW or similar for Thursday would be good.
