kinda funny I can easily do a femoral-popliteal bypass, but put me in a simple declot and I'm lost as hell
Also brains are a lot easier than you'd think to operate on, they're pretty fun to do
just wanted to say you're really awesome and i love that you're a writer and also a surgical tech! i'm going back to school this fall for surgical tech and i'm really excited/nervous about it. are there any pointers that you have for someone just starting out? my surg tech program here in illinois is very competitive, only 20 students get in each year and only 10 each semester.
Hii that’s such a sweet compliment thank you so much! Yess we’re combining the love of literature with the love of surgery over here fr
Congrats on going back to school, that is so exciting! Scrub techs are underrated af in the medical field and need more recognition and I love that you chose to go into it, I have really fallen in love with the profession and I’m wishing you all the luck and best wishes getting into your program! 🫶🏽✨✨✨
As for pointers: I definitely recommend trying to write down as much as you can when given information, this will help tons if you have notes or something written down to refer back to at any point because you’ll be learning a lot of different things (medical terminology was one I needed many notes for, different surgical equipment and supplies, instruments, anatomy etc) and that may help keep things a little more organized for you!
Second, in the words of all my past instructors lmao, “be a sponge”. Hopefully your program will start with very simple and easy basics but the OR and the surgical field are kind of its own language and a whole world on its own so don’t be scared if you feel a little overwhelmed at first with everything. It’s gonna be new but you don’t have to start making sense of it all right away, concepts and things like sterile technique will form into place for you the more you do it, just try and soak up as much knowledge and practice as you can and work on doing things faster and more efficiently later!
The speed will come, whether it’s setting up your table or learning instrument names or learning about suture and equipment, aseptic technique especially, the efficiency and second nature feel will come.
Lastly, I would say being nervous is a good thing and there may be times when aspects of scrubbing may make you feel that way and that just means you care, learning how to pass instruments to the surgeon was a big one for me, but leaning into that feeling and trusting yourself, relying on your training and the surgical conscience you’ll be taught along the way will help and the confidence in your skills will come the more you practice, don’t doubt your ability to be a surgical tech for a moment even when challenges arise!
I could probably give like twenty more tidbits of advice but for someone just starting out I think those are the main ones that I hope will be helpful to you on your journey and please know my inbox is always open if you have more questions when you start out or wanna talk all things scrub tech 💗 I got youuu!
The fact I can travel across the nation for my job is dope af
