This study aims to identify the survival rate of snapping shrimps at different levels of salinity. The different levels of salinity used were T1-0ppt, T2-10ppt, T3-20ppt, T4-25ppt, and T5-35ppt) with three replications. The experiment was laid out in a Complete Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with five (5) treatments. One way ANOVA was used to test the significance among the treatments with the ratio of one liter per sample. Results showed that snapping shrimp at zero (0) percent ppt died at day 1. While other treatment such as the 10ppt got 53.3%, 20ppt (63.3%), 35ppt and 56.7% survival rate. Highest percent survival of 90% was obtained at 25ppt. The temperature and salinity are at optimum level which is 30.7% and 25ppt respectively. The level of tolerable salinity of the snapping shrimp is at 25 ppt as observed in the percent survival obtained. Results suggest that salinity stress test survival rate gives the fisher folks an avenue that snapping shrimps is a good potential for culture.
This study investigated the growth response of elvers in tanks fed with different diets from March 1, 2024 to May 31, 2024. The study aimed to evaluate the (a) specific growth rates (both weight and length), (b) feed conversion ratio, and (c) survival rates. The results indicated that Treatment 2 (Taiwan Feeds) and Treatment 1 (China Feeds – Control) exhibited the highest specific growth rates in weight, with Treatment 2 recording 1±3.11 and Treatment 1 recording 0.8±0.40, while Treatment 3 (Formulated Feeds) exhibited the lowest specific growth rate in weight at 0.62±0.33. However, statistical analysis revealed no significant differences (p>0.05) on specific growth rates among all the treatments. On the other hand, Treatment 2 revealed the highest recorded SGR in terms of length at 1.67±0.19. Meanwhile, results on Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) revealed that Treatment 1 with (2.11+0.33) is numerically efficient over the other two treatments. Survival rates for all three treatments were sustained at 100% over the 90-day culture period. These findings contribute valuable insights into optimizing elver growth under different feeding regimes, highlighting the potential efficiency of various feed sources in eel aquaculture at optimum culture environment.
Blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) is considered as high priced crustacean in Southeast Asia, valued and in demand in the market for its delicate and flavorful meat. The present work was carried out with a view of determining the survival rate for live storage of blue swimmer crab in chilled sawdust, rice hull and wet cloth. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used to set up the study in three (3) corresponding replications. This study also aimed to determine the acceptability of the meat quality of blue swimmer crab in terms of appearance, aroma, mouthfeel with texture and taste. Sensory evaluation utilized the mixed method particularly descriptive and experimental research design with four (4) different treatments; T0 – Untreated (fresh caught), T1– sawdust, T2 – rice hull and T3 – wet cloth. The study was conducted at Busalian Island, Talibon, Bohol, Philippines. Self-constructed questionnaire was used as a tool for gathering the data needed for the study. Results showed that the blue swimmer crab in Treatment 3 got the highest survival rate of 95.83% while Treatment 2 got the lowest survival rate of 87.5%. In terms of sensory evaluation, Treatment 1 got the highest mean score of 8.95, 8.89 and 8.91 in terms of appearance, aroma and mouthfeel, respectively, while the Treatment 3 got the highest mean score of 8.98 in terms taste. This implies that wet cloth is the best packing medium for live storage of blue swimmer crab and sawdust is recommended for better sensory quality.
