one of the things i’m most excited for writing in sun under soil is how i’m thinking about these two goblins that become the main character’s best friends and companions. they’re so clever in terms of fine motor skills and inventing, and they CAN be fantastic at problem solving, but they are also. so stupid. these two boys have never had a thought about consequences in their life, and it shows.
Flora says they’re in a cave of poison mushrooms. One of them has already eaten a mouthful. Flora asks how they might get over a ten foot fence. the boys have already constructed an extremely dubiously stable stack of “things they found” to get over. how they haven’t died yet, she has no clue
Oh yeah. It’s all coming together.
I simply don’t know how to START sun under soil. I don’t want it in media res — I want a scene of Flora going about her day and establishing how she lived as a member of the magpie order and how she does and doesn’t fit in and how she is both loved and othered. But like the only things I can write rn are where the trauma starts so. Sorry baby I guess your life begins in pain
Word Count Update: 1,741 → 2,225
After being found as an infant in the middle of a storm, Flora has never left her home in the Magpie Order of clerics and healers. She wants nothing more than to make her superiors proud, but, when a magical plague ward leaves her as the only one capable of saving a town on the brink of ruin, Flora has no choice but to set out in search of a rare panacea flower that only grows deep underground. While it isn’t long before she stumbles across some unexpected help, it comes at a cost. Her new companions are two rowdy, foolhardy goblins, and neither of them have ever heard about table manners before.

NOTES:
I just wanted to write about ducks and then got distracted for like 45 minutes trying to find names. Anyone else have that problem?

Flora was actually a DnD character concept i never got to use. The trope of an easily frightened, pure-hearted character being forced into the world is something I find i write a lot, lol, and I wanted to try playing a support character, but the campaign never actually got off the ground, so I just kind of. Had this little kobold hanging around. Originally, it was a very classic DnD setting, where kobolds and goblins are mistrusted and treated as low-level enemies in the in-universe lore, so I enjoyed the idea of Flora being secretly a kobold, but appearing as this tiny, quiet person who came across as cool and aloof but internally was terrified and nervous.
A few iterations later, she’s now a nervous little goblin who can’t hide her emotions to save her life, but she has the best bedside manner and will do anything to protect those she loves. She has big floppy ears, she likes sweet breads, and she keeps track of all the ducklings that hatch around the magpie convent every year.
all truth told, i like. i know the character growth i want for flora. I know how the story should start and how it should end and how the primary conflict is solved but. the middle ground. what is the second act. what is the climax. how do we get from a to b to z. help
i think flora is to cricket and thistle, as housecats are to squirrels
