susurrux:
Isaac’s brows furrowed at the suggestion. Backpacking, he thought, sounds like something young men do to prove their superiority among their other young men friends. He didn’t say any of this allowed, eyes fixed on the book in his hands. Fiddling with the page’s dog-eared corner, he shrugged in a noncommittal fashion. ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ “ I’m sure we could, ” he answered simply, glancing up at the young woman. Nari, he reminded himself. ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ “ Isn’t that a bit.. adventurous? And physically demanding? ” ㅤ The dead had even less stamina than the living, drawing their energy from who-knows-where, but Isaac couldn’t say that, nor reject Nari’s suggestion flat-out. Instead, he shrugged once more and snapped his book closed, much to the chagrin of the student a table to the right. ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ ㅤ “ Perhaps we’ll save that for next time. ”
“Backpacking,” she said, nodding enthusiastically. She was watching a documentary about travelling the world with nothing but a backpack (and occasionally, a companion) and she had been inspired. Nari felt like she had found her life’s calling — images of her travelling the world, exploring the places and meeting the people while absorbing the culture. The sane part of Nari questioned this lapse of judgement. The other was just excited as the prospects.
“But that’s the great part, the adventure.” She highlighted the word ‘adventure’ with an unneeded flourish and another enthusiastic nod. But she noted that he looked like he would rather do anything but and felt her spirits dampen slightly. “Another day, you promise?”
She held out her pinky and was reminded of her younger self doing the same thing. Oh, backpacking was going to be so much fun, she thought zealously, well-aware of his preference for a more sedentary lifestyle but not giving up nonetheless. “Another day, okay?”
