I cannot stress enough that the situation in Sweida is so bad because of Al Hijri and his militia, who happen to be Druze.
I've been called sectarian for pointing this out, but it's the truth. Other Druze leaders have very openly condemned Al Hijri and want peace and have been willing to work with the new government for the past 7 months.
Al Hijri, who's a drug dealer, and who has ties to the Assad regime as well as to Israel was the one always standing in the way.
he's the one refusing ceasefire after ceasefire, breaking agreement after agreement, and the one starting the violence.
His militias spent months terrorizing civilians, both Druze and otherwise. They're barely letting aid come through, beheading children, massacring entire families, and displacing thousands of people.
The media is trying to spin this as Druze vs Sunnis when the reality is that practically everyone other than Al Hijri and his gang (and Israel) want Al Hijri to surrender.
Sectarianism certainly plays a key role in these recent events, and Hijri's actions have ignited hatred towards all Druze which is a problem (and seems to have been the goal, to further divide the Syrian people) and this must be condemned, and the government should be criticized for the way it's handled the situation thus far for a variety of reasons, but acting like Al Hijri's crimes aren't the root of the problem, and acting like this started from the government prosecuting Druze minorities is dishonest and untrue.
There's so much misinformation and propaganda going on, and there's also a habit of acting like the Sunni majority (who suffered the most during the past 14 years) are always the perpetrators, when that's not true.
Everything happening in Syria is directly a result of 50 years of oppression by the Assad regime, and the Assad regime spent all those decades ignoring sectarianism and dividing the Syrian people.
We can criticize all sides and agree that there aren't necessarily "good guys" but there IS a "bad guy" and that's the trait known as Al Hijri, who's behind every problem in Suweida.
