so many little moments in that clip with maya seeing her grandmother. the tentativeness between them. her grandmother offering her a cigarette. and then maya carrying a good bit of the conversation to further break the ice. when suzanne said “he’ll be back. he told me,” it felt like a call out to one of the last words that maya’s dad may have said to her/them before the accident (there’s definitely more there). suzanne caressing maya’s hand and a twinge of regret between them perhaps? a closeness that was once there when maya was a child and an opportunity to get back to that space.
