The project is an investigation into the little known island of Saltholm. Saltholm is the 21st largest island in Denmark – the kingdom of islands. Despite being one of the largest islands it is also the least populated island with only two permanent residents. Saltholm has a unique formation and history, it lies almost completely flat, butted between the sea and the sky and lying between two large European cities but still undiscovered. Saltholm has historically been used as a landscape of necessity, a place only used when society has needed it the most, as a quarantine station, a fortress, a quarry, a reservation and so on (Saltholm.dk, n.d). In our project we want to work with simple interventions that highlight this unique backstory, highlight its vulnerability, and its strength, tying together the past, present and the future. Time and memory are two concepts we will integrate into the design process. Didn’t you know that islands have their own memory?
