Being born and brought up in city beautiful, I have always taken for granted huge well maintained parks, wide roads swept daily, clean air, beautiful roundabouts and well carpeted sector roads. Wherever I went, lake, rock garden or sec 17 there was cleanliness all around. Infact, I have been so used to it that I assumed this will be a part of my life forever. However when the latest ranking of Chd stumbled to 20th from 3rd in Swachh Survekshan 2019, I realized my rose coloured glasses need to be taken off. Thus, I sat to understand the nitty gritties of why my city beautiful isn’t swachh anymore. I learnt that basic systems like separate wet and dry garbage collection is not happening everywhere. When there are multiple garbage collectors in each sector and people from all floors of a house pay to the garbage collector separately, then why can’t the garbage be seprated at the source? There is no system for solid waste management,( hadn’t Chd MC officials gone to Indore and spent 60 lakhs to understand the system there?), also garbage is dumped in open at dadumajra, even MC has failed to take any major decision or action to improve sanitation condition. I decided to go and ask people from my gully( ofcourse not ranveer), is this what they really feel? To my horror, I was told that everyone was surprised to see ranking at 20 as they expected it to fall to 50. To begin with, there is non availability of ground level staff, they also said that sanitation condition has fallen terribly in last few years and whenever they raised this issue with the MC, it fell on deaf ears. I remember a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet. I am sure, had been alive, he would not have visited Chd, when roads are not swept daily and parks not maintained, then anyone walking in our house would have dirty shoes and how do you expect mind to function well in such insanitary conditions? Also if i may do a little alteration to suit the quote for 21st century Chd, I will not let anyone walk in my city or my mind with dirty thoughts or filthy shoes.
