Oops, more bees. This is a dinky swarm (about 1.5 pounds) that split off of the Golden Horde. Silly bees filled the brood comb with honey and then felt cramped, I suppose. The queen didn’t make it far from the Horde; she only flew about 15 feet and landed in the grass, poor thing. I just scooped her into my temp nuc box and the swarm followed.

I’d been planning on splitting the Horde anyhow; I’ll have to transfer them into a wooden nuc as soon as the ones I ordered get in!

Captured my first swarm of the season on Monday! Got a call from a newbee friend of mine, who overfed his bees this spring, and whammo - big old swarm in his tree. He didn’t have another hive body to spare, and since I lost the Buzzantine Empire in February, I’ve been looking to replace them. 

These girls are purebred Carniolans, which will be a fun change from my fierce Russian cross Golden Horde hive; I ended up with his original marked queen. Still managed to get a sting or three while I was shaking them out of the tree, though!

They’ll be the New Bee-ans, to follow in the empire bee pun theme~
